Is Jordaan good for a photoshoot?
Yes. The Jordaan is the old neighbourhood just west of the Prinsengracht, with small canals such as the Egelantiersgracht and Bloemgracht, narrow streets, plant-lined facades and the Westerkerk tower above the rooftops. It gives canal scenery at a more intimate scale than the main ring. Weekday mornings before about 10:00 are quietest. Sessions start from €150 through TulipFrame; proposal shoots start from €350.
Why Jordaan works on camera
The Jordaan's canals are narrower than the Herengracht or the Keizersgracht, and the houses along them are lower and more mixed in style. That puts people closer to the water and the facades, so the frames feel intimate rather than grand. Small bridges at almost every junction give natural places to stop, and the Westerkerk tower is a landmark you can line up behind you from several streets.
Because the neighbourhood is residential, the details do much of the work: painted doors, bikes, window plants and benches outside front doors. It suits couples who want their photos to feel like a walk through the city, and it combines easily with the Brouwersgracht on its northern edge.
The best photo spots
- 01
Egelantiersgracht
A small canal with low bridges and gabled houses close to the water. One of the most photogenic stretches in the neighbourhood, especially in the morning.
- 02
Bloemgracht
A slightly wider canal with trees and well-kept facades, and noticeably quieter than the streets nearer the Prinsengracht.
- 03
The Westerkerk from the Prinsengracht
The church tower makes a strong background from the nearby quays and bridges. The Anne Frank House is next door, so this stretch is busy from mid-morning.
- 04
Noordermarkt and the Noorderkerk
A church square at the northern end of the Jordaan with cafés around it. Market mornings (usually Monday and Saturday) are lively; other mornings are calm.
- 05
The side streets
The short cross streets between the canals, such as the Tweede Egelantiersdwarsstraat, have small shops, cafés and bikes, and work well for candid walking frames.
When to go
Weekday mornings before about 10:00, when the side streets are quiet; Sunday mornings stay calm until late morning.
How long to plan
60–90 minutes covers two or three canals and a side street at an unhurried pace.

Practical notes
Residents first. The Jordaan is a residential area. Keep voices down early in the morning, do not sit on front steps or benches that belong to houses without asking, and stay off houseboats.
Crowds. The area around the Westerkerk and the Anne Frank House is busy all day; the canals further north and west are much calmer, particularly on weekday mornings.
Bikes. The streets are narrow and cyclists use all of them. Pose to the side, not in the middle of the street.
Getting there. About 15 minutes' walk from Amsterdam Centraal. Drones are not allowed over the city, which lies inside Schiphol's controlled airspace.
Local tip: Several hofjes (almshouse courtyards) hide behind street doors here. They are homes, so treat them as quiet visits rather than shoot locations. The Prinsengracht near the Anne Frank House is busy all day.
Jordaan photoshoot: questions
Where is the Jordaan in Amsterdam?
Just west of the Prinsengracht, between the Brouwersgracht to the north and the Leidsegracht to the south. It is about 15 minutes' walk from Amsterdam Centraal.
Is the Jordaan less crowded than the main canals?
Mostly, yes. The streets near the Westerkerk and the Anne Frank House are busy, but the small canals and side streets further in are quiet on weekday mornings.
Can we have photos taken in a Jordaan hofje?
Not as a photoshoot. Hofjes are courtyards of homes, and residents ask visitors to keep quiet. The canals outside give a similar old-Amsterdam feel without disturbing anyone.
