Couple Photoshoot

A relaxed walk through a Dutch city with a local photographer, photographing the two of you as you are, for no particular reason.

What does couple photoshoot cost?

A couple photoshoot is a relaxed 1–2 hour walk with a local photographer through a Dutch city, photographing the two of you together: along canals, over bridges, in parks. It needs no occasion. Prices start from €180 for one hour; the final quote varies with duration, location, date and the photographer you are matched with.

A couple photoshoot is the general-purpose session for two people: no ring, no anniversary date, no wedding next month. You are in Amsterdam for a long weekend, or you have lived in Utrecht together for three years and have no good photos of the two of you. A photographer walks a short route with you, gives you small things to do together, and photographs what happens.

Most couples come with one worry: that it will feel staged. The session is designed around the opposite: walking, talking, and a few simple prompts.

Which couples session is which?

We offer six couples services because people book them for different reasons, and the planning is different for each:

SessionWhat it is forFrom
Couple photoshootRelaxed photos of you two, any reason or none€180
Romantic photoshootA more intimate, cinematic mood, often at dusk€180
Anniversary photographyMarking years together, recreating old photos€180
Honeymoon photoshootNewlyweds travelling in the Netherlands€180
Engagement photographyPlanned shoot after a proposal, for save-the-dates€300
Proposal photographyA hidden photographer captures the question itself€350

If in doubt, the couple photoshoot is the right default.

What a session looks like

A one-hour session typically covers two or three spots within walking distance. You meet at an easy landmark, spend the first minutes walking and chatting, then move into prompts: walk ahead holding hands, stop on a bridge, tell each other something ridiculous, lean on the railing. The photographer shoots wide, close and in between.

Most couples find the second half easier than the first. That is normal, and it is why 1.5 hours often gives noticeably better results than one.

Good compact routes for couples: the Jordaan and the Nine Streets in Amsterdam (see our Amsterdam couple photoshoot guide); the Oudegracht wharves in Utrecht; the Oude Delft and Nieuwe Kerk in Delft; and the Erasmusbrug and Kop van Zuid in Rotterdam.

Choosing the time of day

  • Sunrise: empty streets, soft pink light, but a very early start (around 5:30 in June, after 8:30 in December).
  • Morning: easy light and quieter streets before about 10:00.
  • Golden hour: warm light, busier streets, the classic look. In summer that means late evening, around 21:00–22:00.
  • Blue hour: after sunset, with lights coming on in canal houses. Moody, beautiful, needs a photographer comfortable with low light.

We compare the options in sunrise vs sunset in Amsterdam.

Prompts, not poses

The difference between stiff couple photos and good ones is mostly what you are asked to do. Photographers who shoot couples regularly rarely say "stand there and smile". Instead:

  • "Walk towards me, and bump shoulders every few steps."
  • "Whisper the worst joke you know."
  • "Stop on the bridge and look at the water, not at me."
  • "Hold hands and walk away; one of you look back."
  • "Pretend you are arguing about where to have dinner."

These give you something to do and produce real expressions. You do not need to be demonstrative in public if that is not you: many of the best frames are two people walking side by side, laughing about something the photographer cannot hear.

Tell the photographer anything that matters: a height difference you want to play down, a side you prefer, whether you are comfortable kissing on camera. It changes how they direct.

What to wear as a couple

Coordinate, do not match. Pick a palette of two or three colours and let each of you wear some of them. Avoid one person in black and the other in white; the camera struggles with both at once. Layers help with Dutch wind, and comfortable shoes matter on cobbles and bridges. More ideas in what to wear for an Amsterdam photoshoot.

Couple Photoshoot: questions

We are awkward in photos. Will this work?

Almost every couple says that. Photographers use prompts and movement rather than stiff poses, and most couples relax within ten minutes.

Do we need a reason to book a couple photoshoot?

No. If there is a specific occasion, such as an anniversary or honeymoon, tell us: those sessions are planned slightly differently.

What if it rains?

Light rain can look great with an umbrella and reflections. For heavy rain, photographers usually offer to reschedule. See an Amsterdam photoshoot in the rain.

Can we bring our dog?

Usually yes. Mention it in the request so the photographer plans a route that works for the dog too.

How much does a couple photoshoot cost in Amsterdam?
