What does tulip field photoshoot cost?
A tulip field photoshoot is a spring session among the flowers, usually from about late March to early May, with the tulips typically peaking around mid-April. Most take place in the bulb region between Haarlem and Leiden, about 45 minutes from Amsterdam. It starts from €250, including the photographer's travel from nearby cities. Your quote depends on the date, location, duration and group size.
The tulip season is short and the weather decides it. Most years the flowers open in waves: crocuses and daffodils from late March, hyacinths in early April, tulips from around mid-April to late April. A warm spring can move everything a week or two earlier; a cold one, later.
A tulip photoshoot is only as good as its location, and the classic "walking between the rows" photo needs a field where visitors are actually allowed in. We match your request with a photographer who knows the region and which places welcome visitors that season.

Where the tulips grow
| Region | Where | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Bulb region (Bollenstreek) | Lisse, Hillegom, Noordwijkerhout, Sassenheim | Closest to Amsterdam and Leiden; busiest |
| Kop van Noord-Holland | Around Anna Paulowna and 't Zand | Large fields, quieter, further north |
| Flevoland | Noordoostpolder, near Emmeloord | Huge fields; a signposted tulip route in season |
Most photographers who shoot tulips near Amsterdam work in the Bollenstreek. The tulip field photoshoot near Amsterdam guide and the Amsterdam tulip photographer page cover routes and timing.
Field etiquette: stay out of the rows
Tulip fields are working farms. The farmer is growing bulbs, not flowers, and trampling damages the crop. Every spring farmers put up signs and fences, and at the busiest fields there are stewards. Do not walk into a production field without the farmer's permission — it is private land, and in recent seasons stewards have been posted at the busiest fields.
What that means for your shoot:
- photographs from the roadside, a public path or the verge give the classic rows behind you without stepping in
- several farms and flower attractions open their own fields to visitors in season, sometimes with a small entry fee — the photographer will pick one that allows it that year
- never pick flowers or lie down in the rows
A good photographer will not suggest a shot that means trespassing.
Keukenhof
Keukenhof in Lisse is a garden, not a field: seven million bulbs in designed beds, open for about eight weeks each spring (announced dates for 2027 are 18 March to 9 May). It is beautiful and very busy, particularly from late morning to mid-afternoon.
You and the photographer each need an entry ticket. Keukenhof does not allow drones, and professional or commercial shoots may need to be arranged with Keukenhof in advance, so check the current conditions with Keukenhof directly before planning a paid shoot inside the park. Many photographers prefer the fields around Keukenhof for this reason. See our Keukenhof photoshoot guide.
Timing, light and weather
- Book the week, not the day. Keep the exact date flexible until about a week before, then pick the best forecast.
- Late afternoon or early morning. Low sun backlights the petals; midday is harsh and crowded. Mid-April sunset is around 20:30.
- Farmers top the tulips. Late in the season the heads are cut off to strengthen the bulbs, often in late April or early May, so a field can go from full colour to green stems in a day.
- Wind and cold. The bulb region is flat and close to the coast. Bring a coat that works in photos.
What to wear among tulips
Tulip fields are a wall of one saturated colour, so clothes need to stand apart from them. White, cream, pale blue and soft grey work with almost every field. A single bold colour that contrasts — navy against yellow, white against red — also works. Avoid wearing the same colour as the flowers, and avoid busy floral prints, which compete with the real thing.
April in the Netherlands can be 8°C and windy one day and 20°C the next. Bring a coat you are happy to be photographed in, and shoes that can handle a muddy verge. Long dresses look lovely but catch the wind; a fitted top half helps.

Tulips usually peak around mid-April, with the season running from about late March to early May. It varies every year with the weather, so keep your date flexible.
Can we walk into the tulip fields?
Not into production fields without the farmer's permission. Some farms and attractions open fields to visitors in season. Your photographer will choose a place where it is allowed.
Can we do a professional shoot at Keukenhof?
You and the photographer each need a ticket and drones are not allowed. Professional shoots may need to be arranged with Keukenhof in advance, so check the current conditions with Keukenhof before booking.
How far are the tulip fields from Amsterdam?
The bulb region around Lisse and Hillegom is about 45–60 minutes by road from central Amsterdam, depending on traffic.
What should we wear?
Solid colours that contrast with the flowers — white, cream, pale blue or a single bold colour. Avoid the same shade as the tulips behind you. Bring a coat; it is often windy.
What if the tulips are finished when we arrive?
Late-season fields may already be topped. The photographer will suggest the best remaining fields or a flower attraction, and will be honest if a date is too late.
