Is Magere Brug and the Amstel good for a photoshoot?
Yes. The Magere Brug is a white wooden drawbridge over the Amstel, outlined in bulbs after dark. The river is much wider than the canals, so you get open sky, reflections and room to frame the whole bridge from the quays. Early morning gives you an empty bridge; evening and blue hour give you the lights. Sessions here start from €150 through TulipFrame, and couple shoots from €180.
Why Magere Brug and the Amstel works on camera
The Amstel is the river Amsterdam takes its name from, and at the Magere Brug it is wide enough to step back and fit the whole bridge in frame with water and sky around it, which the narrow canals cannot offer. The white-painted timber reads clearly against dark water, in grey weather as well as in sun.
The bulbs along the bridge make it one of the city's best evening backdrops. The river runs roughly north to south here, so the two banks give you different light at different times of day, and the long classical facades along the Amstel make a calmer background than the busy canal-belt streets.
The best photo spots
- 01
The west quay, facing the bridge
From the Amstel quay on the canal-belt side you can frame the full length of the bridge with the river in front. This is where the classic shot is taken.
- 02
The east bank by Carré
The Royal Theatre Carré stands on the east bank just upstream of the bridge. Its facade and the quay in front give a second backdrop, and in the morning the sun is behind you here.
- 03
On the bridge itself
A few quick frames on the bridge work well early in the day. Keep to the edges: it is closed to cars but busy with cyclists and walkers.
- 04
The Amstelhof
The long seventeenth-century facade of the Amstelhof, on the east bank between the Magere Brug and the Blauwbrug, gives a formal, symmetrical background.
- 05
The Blauwbrug
Downstream, the stone Blauwbrug with its lanterns and crowns makes a final frame on the walk towards Waterlooplein and the Stopera.
When to go
Early morning for an empty bridge; after dark for the lights. In winter the bridge is lit by 17:00.
How long to plan
45–60 minutes for the bridge and both banks; 90 minutes if you walk on to the Blauwbrug or the Reguliersgracht.

Practical notes
Cyclists. The bridge is closed to cars but carries a steady flow of bikes and walkers. Pose at the edges and never stand across the cycle path.
Crowds. Afternoons and summer evenings are busy, as the bridge is on many walking routes. Early morning is the time for an empty bridge.
Boats. The Magere Brug is a working drawbridge and can open for passing boats. If it does, wait on the quay until it closes.
Getting there. Weesperplein metro station is a short walk from the east bank, and the Reguliersgracht is about ten minutes away on foot. Drones are not allowed over central Amsterdam.
Local tip: The Magere Brug is closed to cars but busy with cyclists and pedestrians. Shoot from the Amstel quays on either side to get the whole bridge in frame, rather than standing on it.
Magere Brug and the Amstel photoshoot: questions
When are the Magere Brug lights on?
From dusk, so the time shifts with the season. In winter the bridge is lit by about 17:00; in midsummer it is not properly dark until after 22:00, which means a late session.
Can we stand on the bridge for photos?
Briefly, yes, ideally early in the day. It is a busy route for cyclists and pedestrians, so most of the session is shot from the quays, which is also where the whole bridge fits in the frame.
Is the Magere Brug good for a proposal?
It works well at blue hour, when the lights are on. It is more public than a quiet canal, so if you want privacy, the Reguliersgracht or an early-morning slot may suit you better. See proposal photography in Amsterdam.
