Is Oude Delft canal good for a photoshoot?
Yes. The Oude Delft is the oldest canal in Delft, lined with lime trees, gabled houses and low bridges, with the leaning tower of the Oude Kerk rising over the water. The canals are narrow and much quieter than Amsterdam’s, so you get a classic Dutch canal look with room to work. Go on a weekday morning or in late-afternoon light. Through TulipFrame, sessions start from €150 for a solo photoshoot.
Why Oude Delft canal works on camera
Delft’s canals are built at a human scale. The water is narrow enough that the far bank stays in focus behind you, the bridges are low and close together, and the trees meet over the canal in summer. That makes for intimate, layered backgrounds — brick, leaves, water and a bridge railing — rather than the wide, grand views of a big city.
The Oude Kerk gives the Oude Delft its anchor. Its brick tower leans visibly, and from the bridges along the canal you can frame it across the water with the houses in front. Vermeer is buried in this church and the Prinsenhof, where William of Orange was assassinated in 1584, stands on the same canal, so the setting has real history behind it. It is a natural fit for couple photography in Delft, and the Markt is two minutes away for a wider shot.
The best photo spots
- 01
Oude Kerk across the water
From the bridges near the church, the leaning tower rises above the canal and the trees. Late-afternoon light warms the brick.
- 02
Prinsenhof stretch
The canal-side around the Prinsenhof museum is lined with old façades and trees and is quieter than the streets near the Markt.
- 03
Gemeenlandshuis
A Gothic façade on the Oude Delft decorated with painted coats of arms, a detailed backdrop for close portraits.
- 04
Hippolytusbuurt and the Vismarkt
The canal beside the Stadhuis, with the small old fish market. It links the Oude Delft to the Markt in a minute’s walk.
- 05
Voldersgracht
A short, narrow canal just behind the Markt, close to the Vermeer Centrum. Good for tight frames with the water and brick close behind you.
- 06
Koornmarkt
A broad tree-lined canal south of the Markt with wide quays, useful when the Oude Delft is busy and for family groups who need more space.
When to go
Morning light along the canal; late afternoon for warm light on the tower.
How long to plan
An hour covers the Oude Delft, the Oude Kerk and a loop past the Markt; 90 minutes adds the Oostpoort.

Practical notes
- Crowds: quiet on weekday mornings; busier around the Markt on market days and summer afternoons. The side canals stay calm even when the square is full.
- Wind: sheltered by houses and trees, so wind is rarely a problem compared with the coast.
- Access: flat and compact, with step-free quays. Many canal edges have no railing, so keep an eye on small children.
- Rules: the houses are homes. Keep off doorsteps, do not move parked bikes, and keep noise down early in the morning. Photography inside the churches and the Prinsenhof follows their own rules, so check with them first.
- Transport: Delft station is about a 10-minute walk from the Oude Delft, and around 10–15 minutes by train from The Hague or Rotterdam. Tram 1 also runs from Scheveningen and The Hague. Parking in the old centre is limited; the station garage is easiest.
Local tip: Quiet on weekday mornings; bikes are parked everywhere, so a photographer will look for clear bridge railings.
Oude Delft canal photoshoot: questions
Which canal in Delft is best for photos?
The Oude Delft, for the trees, the old façades and the leaning Oude Kerk tower. The Voldersgracht and Hippolytusbuurt near the Markt are good for tighter frames, and the Koornmarkt has more space for groups.
Is Delft less crowded than Amsterdam for a canal shoot?
Much less. Outside the Markt on busy days, most Delft canals have only a few passers-by, which suits proposals and couples who feel self-conscious in front of a camera.
Can we combine the Delft canals with The Hague or Rotterdam?
Yes. Delft is about 10–15 minutes by train from both, so a morning canal session in Delft and an afternoon in The Hague or Rotterdam is easy to arrange.
