Engagement Photography

A planned session for engaged couples: photos for save-the-dates, your wedding website and the story before the wedding.

What does engagement photography cost?

Engagement photography is a planned session for couples who are already engaged, usually 1.5–2 hours with two locations and an outfit change, producing images for save-the-dates, a wedding website and the wedding day itself. It starts from €300; the final quote depends on duration, locations, travel and the photographer.

An engagement shoot happens after the proposal. It is not the moment itself (that is proposal photography); it is a planned session where you know the photographer is coming, choose your outfits, and pick places that mean something to both of you.

It also doubles as a rehearsal. If you are getting married in the Netherlands, an engagement session with your wedding photographer, or someone with a similar style, shows you how you look together on camera and what directions feel natural, before the day that matters most.

Why engagement sessions start at €300

Engagement photography starts from €300, higher than a couple photoshoot at €180, because the session is bigger by design:

  • Usually 1.5–2 hours rather than one
  • Two locations, often with travel between them
  • An outfit change, often one casual and one formal
  • More deliverables: horizontal images for a wedding website, verticals for social media, and frames with space for save-the-date text

If you just want a quick set of photos to announce the news, a couple photoshoot may be enough.

What the photos are used for

  1. Save-the-dates. Ask for a few frames with empty sky or wall to one side for text.
  2. Wedding website. One wide hero image and a handful of portraits.
  3. Guest book or welcome sign at the wedding.
  4. Announcements to family who were not there.
  5. Your own record of this in-between time, which couples often say passes too fast.

Choosing locations

The best engagement locations have a reason: where you met, your first date, the neighbourhood you live in. After that, contrast helps. Popular pairings:

Get the wedding venue involved too if it is local and open to it: a few frames there make a lovely link between the two sessions.

Some couples do both: a proposal with a short session straight after, then a full engagement shoot in a different season.

Outfits, the ring and seasons

Most engagement sessions include one change: something you would wear on a relaxed weekend, then something you would wear to a good dinner. The first suits canals and parks; the second suits evening light and grander settings, such as the Rijksmuseum area in Amsterdam or the Binnenhof surroundings in The Hague (check what is currently accessible, as parts of the Binnenhof are under long-term renovation).

For the ring:

  • Have it cleaned beforehand. Close-ups show everything.
  • Moisturise your hands and keep nails simple.
  • If the ring is being resized, schedule the shoot after it comes back.

Seasons change the look completely. April brings tulips and blossom but also chilly wind; summer gives late golden hours and busy streets; October has warm leaf colour in parks like the Vondelpark and Haarlemmerhout; December offers early blue hour and lights along the canals. There is no wrong season, only different photos, so pick the one that matches your wedding or your save-the-date design.

Engagement Photography: questions

When should we have our engagement shoot?

Three to twelve months before the wedding if the photos are for save-the-dates. Allow a few weeks for editing before printing.

Can we bring our engagement ring into focus?

Yes. Photographers take a few close-ups of hands and the ring. A clean ring and freshly done nails help.

Should we use our wedding photographer?

If they are local and available, yes: it is a good trial. If not, we can match you with a photographer whose style fits.

Can we do the engagement shoot in tulip fields?

Yes, in the season, which usually runs from mid-April into early May depending on the weather. Many fields are private farmland, so photographers use fields where access is allowed.

What should we wear?

One casual and one smarter look, coordinated in colour. Avoid matching outfits and bold logos.
