How much does a photographer cost in Amersfoort?

A photographer in Amersfoort through TulipFrame starts from €180 for a couple photoshoot, €250 for family photography and €150 for a portrait session. Engagement photography starts from €300. Final quotes depend on the photographer, how long the session runs and the date. The historic centre is small, so a one-hour session can cover the Koppelpoort, the Muurhuizen and the tower.

Amersfoort kept more of its medieval shape than most Dutch towns. Its first city wall was demolished in the 15th century and houses were built on the foundations, following the curve: these are the Muurhuizen, a ring of wall-houses you can walk right round. The second wall left the Koppelpoort, a gate that combines a land gate and a water gate over the river Eem, and the Onze Lieve Vrouwetoren still rises almost 100 metres over the square where its church once stood.

It is an easy trip from Amsterdam or Utrecht and quiet for most of the week, which makes it good for couples and families who want old streets without competing for space.

Why photograph in Amersfoort

The Muurhuizen give you a curving street of small, uneven houses that is unlike other Dutch town centres, and the Koppelpoort is one of the most striking gates in the country, with its towers standing over the water. The Onze Lieve Vrouwetoren is visible from almost everywhere in the centre, so it anchors many wider shots. The canals here are narrow and green, with bridges at human scale.

Painter Piet Mondriaan was born in Amersfoort, and the town leans into it with the Mondriaanhuis museum — a nice detail for creative portrait sessions.

  1. People walking on bridge over river during daytime

01 · Northwest of the centre

    Koppelpoort

A combined land and water gate from around 1400, with towers over the river Eem and a wooden treadwheel mechanism that once raised the water gate. From the bridges and the quays either side, its reflection is the classic Amersfoort shot.

Best time: Early morning for still water; late afternoon for light on the towers.

Tip: The quays around the gate have space for families; ten minutes on foot from the station.

  2. A large brick castle with a bridge leading to it

    02 · Centrum

    Muurhuizen

A curving street of houses built on the foundations of the first city wall, with small front gardens, old gables and cobbles. The curve means there is always a vanishing street behind you.

Best time: Morning or overcast days for soft light in the narrow street.

Tip: These are homes; keep doorsteps clear and voices low.

  3. Brown and white concrete building under white clouds during daytime

    03 · Lieve Vrouwekerkhof

    Onze Lieve Vrouwetoren

The Gothic tower (around 98 metres) survived when its church was destroyed by a gunpowder explosion in 1787. The square below, the Lieve Vrouwekerkhof, marks where the church stood, with a pattern in the paving and café terraces around it.

Best time: Late afternoon, when the tower catches the western light.

Tip: The tower was the reference point for the Dutch national coordinate grid. Market days fill the square; check before going.

  4. A large brick building with a bridge

    04 · Centrum

    Kamperbinnenpoort

A 13th-century gate from the first wall, a sturdy brick tower on a small green square where the Muurhuizen begin. It is a compact, characterful frame.

Best time: Any time; good with warm afternoon light.

Tip: Start or finish a Muurhuizen walk here.

  5. Gray concrete building near river during daytime

05 · South side of the centre

    Monnikendam gate and the Zuidsingel

A small water gate on the south side of the old town, on the tree-lined Zuidsingel canal, with the park-like banks of the old defences around it.

    Best time: Autumn afternoons.

Tip: Quieter than the Koppelpoort and good for families.

  6. 06 · Amersfoortse Berg

    Belgenmonument

A monument built by Belgian refugees after the First World War, set in the woods on the Amersfoortse Berg with a long view down a grass avenue. The woods around it give a natural, green setting a few minutes from town.

    Best time: Golden hour.

Tip: It is a war memorial: keep sessions quiet and respectful, and choose the woodland rather than posing on the monument.

Best time of day

Morning for still water at the Koppelpoort and empty Muurhuizen; late afternoon for warm light on the tower.

Amersfoort through the seasons

Spring
Blossom along the singels and fresh green on the old defences by late April.
Summer
Café terraces on the squares and long evenings. The centre stays calmer than in the big cities.
Autumn
The trees along the singels and on the Amersfoortse Berg turn in October.
Winter
Quiet centre, sunset around 16:30 in December and seasonal lights in the streets.

Weather and the rain plan

Amersfoort is inland, with less wind than the coast. For rain, the gateways (Koppelpoort and Kamperbinnenpoort) and covered shop entrances are the nearest shelter, and overcast light suits the narrow Muurhuizen.

Getting there and around

Amersfoort Centraal is about 35 minutes from Amsterdam Centraal and about 15 minutes from Utrecht Centraal by Intercity. The historic centre is a 10-minute walk from the station. There are parking garages around the old town.

Local rules and etiquette

The Muurhuizen and houses around the gates are private homes. The Belgenmonument is a memorial; treat it accordingly.
