Canal in city

The short answer

Autumn is one of the best times for an Amsterdam photoshoot. September is mild and settled; the canal trees usually turn yellow and gold from late October to mid-November. Sunrise moves to around 08:00 in mid-October, so dawn sessions are easy, and the clock change in late October brings sunset forward to about 17:15. Expect more rain as the season goes on.

Autumn in Amsterdam comes in three quite different parts: a warm, golden September that still feels like summer; an October of changing leaves and changing weather; and a November that moves from peak colour to bare branches and early dusk. Plan for the part you want.

September: long evenings, fewer crowds

September often brings the most settled weather of the second half of the year. Temperatures are usually in the high teens, sunset falls around 20:30 at the start of the month and around 20:00 by mid-month, and the summer crowds thin out once European school holidays end.

  • Good for couples who want warm evening light without a 22:00 sunset.
  • Trees are still green; colour comes later.
  • Sunrise around 07:00–07:15 makes dawn sessions practical for the first time since spring.

October: the turn

Through October, sunrise slides to about 08:05 by mid-month. That is the sweet spot for early sessions: you can meet at 07:45, catch first light over the Herengracht, and still be at breakfast by 09:30.

Around the last Sunday of October the clocks go back one hour (25 October in 2026). Overnight, sunset jumps from about 18:30 to about 17:25, and sunrise from about 08:20 to 07:25. If you book an evening shoot in the last week of October, double-check which side of the change your date falls on.

Rain becomes more frequent. It usually comes as showers with bright gaps, so keep an hour of flexibility. See what happens if it rains.

Mid-October also brings the Amsterdam Dance Event, which fills hotels and nightlife; it has little effect on quiet canal-side mornings but can push up accommodation prices.

Late October to mid-November: peak colour

The elms and other trees lining the canals typically turn yellow and gold from late October, with the best colour often in the first half of November. Timing varies with the weather: a warm autumn delays it, an early storm strips the trees in a day. Your photographer will know how the trees look that week.

Where autumn colour shows best:

  • Canal belt: Keizersgracht and Prinsengracht, where rows of trees frame the gables and drop leaves onto the moored boats. Leaves on the water add texture.
  • Vondelpark: broad paths, big trees and ponds. Busy with runners and cyclists, but spacious.
  • Amsterdamse Bos: a large woodland park on the southern edge of the city, much quieter, with real forest colour. It needs a tram, bus or bike to reach, so plan it as its own session.
  • Westerpark and Sarphatipark: smaller, local, good for families.

November: short days, soft light

By mid-November sunset is around 16:50 and sunrise around 08:00. Colour fades through the month, but the low sun and misty mornings bring their own look. At the end of the month the Amsterdam Light Festival usually opens, with dates changing every year. It is covered in the winter guide.

What to wear in autumn

Autumn is the easiest season to dress for on camera:

  • Camel, rust, olive, mustard, burgundy and denim all sit well with golden leaves and brick.
  • Trench coats and knits give structure and warmth.
  • Scarves add colour and something to do with your hands.
  • Shoes that can handle wet leaves: they are slippery on bridge steps.

A sample October morning

Sunrise sessions are rarely easier than in October. A 75-minute couple session might look like this:

  • 07:45 Meet on the Brouwersgracht, where the canal runs east to west and catches the first light along its length.
  • 08:15 Cross into the Jordaan side canals, the Bloemgracht and Egelantiersgracht, while the streets are still empty.
  • 08:40 Walk down the Prinsengracht under the turning trees towards the Westerkerk.
  • 09:00 Finish near the Nine Streets as the cafés open, just as the first tour groups appear.

On a still morning you get reflections of trees and gables on the water. On a misty one, which is common in autumn, the far end of the canal fades softly into grey, a look you cannot get in summer.

Who autumn suits

  • Couples and engagements: warm tones and cosy layers. See the couple photoshoot guide.
  • Families: later sunrises mean a 09:00 session still has soft light, and children are not melting in the heat. See family photoshoots in Amsterdam.
  • Proposals: September evenings offer warmth and fewer crowds than July; November evenings offer dusk before dinner.

Practical notes

  • Weekday mornings are the calmest times on the canals in every season, and autumn is no exception.
  • Wet leaves on bridge steps and cobbles are slippery; take care in heels and with small children.
  • Autumn storms, with strong westerly winds, arrive a few times each season. They are the main reason to move a session, more than rain.
  • Mid-autumn weekdays are among the easiest times of year to find photographer availability at short notice.
  • Bring a spare layer. A 16 °C afternoon can drop to 10 °C by sunset.
  • Starting prices stay the same through the year: a couple photoshoot is from €180. Your final quote depends on the length, date and location.

Questions

When do the leaves change colour in Amsterdam?

Usually from late October, with the best canal colour often in the first half of November. Timing varies from year to year with the weather, and a single storm can strip the trees.

When do the clocks change in autumn?

On the last Sunday of October (25 October in 2026). Sunset moves about an hour earlier overnight, from roughly 18:30 to 17:25, so check which side of the change your date falls on.

Is September a good month for a photoshoot?

Often one of the best. Weather is usually mild and settled, crowds drop after the summer holidays and sunset is around 20:00–20:30, so evening sessions do not run late.

Where can we find autumn colour in Amsterdam?

Along the Keizersgracht and Prinsengracht, in the Vondelpark and Westerpark, and in the Amsterdamse Bos on the southern edge of the city, which feels more like a forest.

Does it rain a lot in autumn?

Rain increases from October onwards, usually as passing showers. Keep an hour of flexibility and agree the weather policy with your photographer when you book.
