Amsterdam Photoshoot in Summer: Beating the Crowds and the 22:00 Sunset

Sunrise at 05:20, sunset after 22:00, and the busiest canals of the year. How to plan a summer photoshoot in Amsterdam that does not fight the crowds.

The short answer

Summer gives Amsterdam its longest days, with sunrise around 05:20 and sunset around 22:00 in late June. It is also peak tourist season. For quiet canals, book an early morning session (06:00–08:00) or a late evening one; avoid midday on open bridges. Pride in late July to early August and warm weekends are the busiest times.

Summer in Amsterdam has more light than you can use. Around the solstice, sunrise is at about 05:17 and sunset about 22:05, and it stays light until well after 22:30. The challenge is not light but people: July and August are peak season, and on a sunny Saturday afternoon the bridges on the Herengracht feel like a queue.

Choosing your hour

SessionTime in late JuneWhat you get
Sunrise05:15–07:00Empty canals, still water, cool air. The hardest alarm of the year.
Early morning07:00–09:00Soft light, few tourists, commuters on bikes. The practical choice.
Midday11:00–16:00Harsh overhead sun and the most crowds. Shade only.
Evening golden hour20:30–22:00Warm light, lively streets, busy bridges.
Blue hour22:05–22:45Deep sky and lamps; late, but magical.

Most local photographers steer summer clients towards 07:00–09:00. It avoids both the 04:30 start and the crowds, and the light is still low. If you prefer the evening, accept that you will share the view, and choose a canal away from the main routes: the Brouwersgracht, the Bloemgracht or the smaller Jordaan side canals rather than the Herengracht near the Leidsestraat.

Sunset moves earlier through the season: about 21:35 at the start of August and about 21:10 by mid-August.

Heat and weather

Typical summer highs are around 21–23 °C, with occasional heatwaves above 30 °C. Summer storms can arrive fast, often in the late afternoon. On hot days:

  • Shoot early; skin shine and squinting both get worse by the hour.
  • Carry water. Few canal-side benches are in shade.
  • Pick locations with shade: the Vondelpark, tree-lined canals, the courtyard of the Rijksmuseum gardens.

If a storm rolls through, see photoshoots in the rain.

Crowds and events

  • Late June to August is the tourist peak. The Anne Frank House area, the Nine Streets and the Damrak are busiest.
  • Pride Amsterdam usually takes place in late July to early August, with the Canal Parade on the Prinsengracht and Amstel on the first Saturday of August. The canals are packed that weekend.
  • Warm weekends bring locals out in boats; the canals become a traffic jam of sloops from mid-afternoon.
  • Weekday mornings remain calm, even in August.
  • Boat traffic is heavy on warm evenings, so canal-level shots from quays can include rental boats and tour cruises. Photographers often wait for gaps or shoot from bridges looking down the canal instead.
  • Cyclists do not slow down for photos. Stand on pavements and quays, never in the bike lane, even for a quick frame.

Summer locations with more space

  • Vondelpark: shade, big lawns and ponds. Busy at weekends, but big enough to find a quiet corner.
  • Westerpark: lawns and the old gasworks buildings; more local.
  • NDSM and the IJ: a free ferry from behind Centraal Station takes you to industrial docks in Amsterdam-Noord, with graffiti, cranes and wide water views. Good for a less classic look, and sunsets over the IJ.
  • Amsterdamse Bos: woods, a rowing course and space.
  • Out of town: summer is a good time for a beach photoshoot at Scheveningen or windmills at the Zaanse Schans, which is best early before the coaches arrive.

For the classic canal spots, see Amsterdam canal photoshoot locations.

What to wear in summer

  • Linen and cotton in light colours: cream, soft blue, sage, terracotta.
  • A light layer for evening sessions; it cools quickly after sunset near the water.
  • Flat sandals or trainers for walking between spots. Keep heels for a few frames only.
  • Sunglasses on top of your head become a distraction in photos; put them in your bag.

Proposals in summer

Summer is popular for proposals because of the long evenings, but the crowds work against a private moment. Two approaches work well. The first is an early proposal around 07:00, when the chosen bridge is almost certainly empty and the planner can invent a reason to be up (an early train, a sunrise walk). The second is an evening proposal on the IJ waterfront or a quiet Jordaan canal rather than the famous Reguliersgracht view. Surprise proposals in Amsterdam covers the logistics, including how your photographer blends in.

A sample early-morning route

  • 06:45 Meet at the Magere Brug over the Amstel; the sun rises roughly in the north-east in summer, lighting the river side.
  • 07:15 Walk along the Keizersgracht and Reguliersgracht; the famous seven-bridges view is quiet at this hour.
  • 07:45 Through the Nine Streets before the shops open.
  • 08:15 Finish on the Bloemgracht, then breakfast.

Summer as a family

Children and 22:00 sunsets do not mix. For families, a 08:00–09:00 session in a park or on a quiet canal usually works best, followed by the rest of the day's sightseeing. See the Amsterdam family photoshoot guide.

When the light is too good

In summer the sun sets roughly in the north-west, so canals running east to west, like the Brouwersgracht and Bloemgracht, get light along their length in the evening, while north-south canals fall into shadow early. On clear evenings the IJ waterfront behind Centraal Station and in Noord looks directly towards the sunset. On bright middays, the best frames are often in open shade under trees, where skin tones stay even. A photographer who works in the city will plan the route around this.

Booking in summer

Popular Saturdays in June and September book up first. If your dates are fixed, send your request as soon as you know them. A tourist photoshoot starts from €150; the final quote depends on duration, time of day and location.
