How much does beach photoshoot cost in Scheveningen?
A beach photoshoot in Scheveningen starts from €180 for about an hour on the sand around the pier, the Noorderstrand or the harbour. Longer sessions, sunset slots in high summer or adding the dunes or The Hague city centre cost more. The final quote depends on the photographer, duration, date and group size.
Scheveningen is the most city-like beach in the Netherlands: a pier with a Ferris wheel, the grand Kurhaus hotel, a boulevard of pavilions and, a short walk away, a working harbour and open dunes. That means one beach session can move from urban to wild in a few hundred metres, and the sun sets over the North Sea.
Tell us who is in the photos and when you are coming. We match you with a photographer who works on this beach and knows where the quiet sand is, when the tide comes in and how to deal with the wind.
Three looks on one beach
Pier and Kurhaus. The central stretch, with the pier, the Ferris wheel and the Kurhaus behind. It is recognisable and lively, especially good at blue hour when the pier lights up. It is also the busiest part. The pier itself is being renovated, with work that started in 2026 and parts of the deck closed while it runs; the view of it from the beach is what most sessions use anyway, but check current access if you want to go up.
Noorderstrand and dunes. Walk north past the pier and the pavilions thin out. Behind the beach, dune paths lead towards Meijendel, giving grass-and-sand backgrounds that feel far from the city.
Harbour side. South of the boulevard, around the harbour heads, the beach has a rougher, more open feel, with the lighthouse and fishing harbour nearby. A few pavilions there stay open all year.
A one-hour session can cover two of these. Pier to Noorderstrand is an easy walk; the harbour is a separate stop.
Sunset, tide and season
The beach faces west-north-west, so sunset is over the water much of the year. Plan the session to end 15–20 minutes after sunset: in June around 22:00, in September around 19:30 to 20:00, in December around 16:30.
Tides change the beach a lot. At high tide, the sand near the pier gets narrow; at low tide there are wide wet flats that reflect the sky. Rijkswaterstaat publishes tide tables for Scheveningen. Ask your photographer to check them for your date.
Seasons: May–June and September have long light and fewer people. July and August are crowded around the pier and parking is hard. Winter gives dramatic skies and an empty beach but cold wind; keep it to 30–45 minutes.
Wind and weather plan
The North Sea wind is the main thing to plan around.
- Shoot with the wind behind you so hair blows away from your face.
- Choose clothes that move well; long dresses look great, but light fabrics wrap around legs.
- Use the dunes for sheltered frames if the wind is strong.
- Bring a blanket or towel for sitting on the sand.
For light rain, the pavilions and the covered boulevard give shelter and the grey sky can be moody. For heavy rain or storm warnings (common in autumn and winter), reschedule. Agree the rescheduling terms when you book.
Who books a Scheveningen beach session
- Couples on a trip to The Hague who want the sea rather than a canal; the pier at blue hour is the signature shot.
- Families, often in May, June or September, with kids digging in the sand while the photographer works around them.
- Proposals, usually just north of the pier at sunset; see the proposal page linked below for how the hiding works.
- Solo travellers and portraits, where the wide empty sand at low tide makes a clean, minimal backdrop.
- Maternity sessions, with flowing dresses; best on calmer days or in the shelter of the dunes.
Tell us which of these you are in your request, and how many people, so the photographer can plan the right part of the beach and time of day.
Rules and practicalities
- Beach rules are set by the municipality of The Hague. Props like blankets, flowers and balloons are generally fine; fires, fireworks and anything that stays behind are not. Check the current rules for your plans.
- Beach pavilions are private property; ask before using their decks.
- The pier is under renovation (full reopening is expected around 2028). Plan on photographing it from the sand.
- Drones: large parts of The Hague lie in restricted airspace. Don't plan on drone shots without checking the rules and permissions.
- Transport: tram 1 or 9 from the centre of The Hague; parking along the boulevard is paid and fills up fast in summer.
Ideas for combining: the The Hague proposal photographer page if you are planning to ask, and The Hague family photographer for sessions with kids. What's included: beach photoshoots.
