Enschede is the largest city in Twente, close to the German border. It grew rich on textiles, and when the mills closed, parts of the city were rebuilt with bold, modern architecture. Photo requests here come almost entirely from residents, students at the University of Twente and Saxion, and local businesses. It isn't a tourist-shoot destination, and we won't pretend otherwise.

For those who live here, the city has a good mix: the Oude Markt with the Grote Kerk, the wooded University of Twente campus, the rebuilt Roombeek district with its old factory buildings, and the Twente countryside just outside town, with heath, lakes and farmland.

Why photograph in Enschede

A campus in the woods

The University of Twente campus sits in woodland on the western edge of the city, with modern buildings set among trees and ponds. It's ideal for graduation photography and for relaxed portraits.

Industrial heritage, rebuilt

Roombeek, a former textile district, was rebuilt with contemporary architecture while keeping some of the old factory buildings, and it gives a mix of old brick and new design.

Twente countryside

Just outside the city, the countryside is gently rolling, with heath, forest, farms and lakes like the Lonnekermeer area. It's a good option for family and couple photos with a natural feel.

Best time of day

The campus and the parks are best in the late afternoon, under the trees. The Twente countryside is at its most beautiful at sunrise and sunset. Enschede is in the east of the country, so the sun sets a few minutes earlier than in Amsterdam: around 21:55 in June and 16:25 in December.

Enschede through the seasons

Spring
Blossom and fresh green on campus and in the countryside from April.
Summer
Graduation season. Long evenings at the Rutbeek and in the countryside.
Autumn
The campus woods turn gold, making it a good season for portraits and family photos.
Winter
Short days, so indoor sessions and office headshots make sense.

Weather and the rain plan

Twente is far from the sea, so summers run a little warmer and winters a little colder than in Amsterdam, with more frost and the occasional snowfall. Showers can come at any time. The campus has covered walkways between buildings for a quick shelter, and office headshots are unaffected, but for outdoor family sessions agree a backup date when you book.

Getting there and around

Direct intercity trains take about two hours from Amsterdam. The campus is a short bus ride from the centre. The Rutbeek and the Lonnekermeer are easiest by car or bike.

Local rules and etiquette

Roombeek has a memorial to the 2000 fireworks disaster; keep your shoot respectful nearby. On university grounds, casual portrait photos are normal, but for larger shoots contact the university.
