Zwolle is a compact Hanseatic city whose old centre is still ringed by a star-shaped moat, the Stadsgracht, with parks along its banks. The Sassenpoort city gate, the canal-side Thorbeckegracht and the onion-domed tower known as the Peperbus give it a skyline that is easy to recognise and easy to walk between.

Most bookings here come from residents and people in the surrounding region, plus students at Windesheim who want graduation photos. Families, couples and wedding parties use the old centre and the moat parks. For visitors, Zwolle is also the railway junction on the way to Giethoorn, so some couples combine the two.

Why photograph in Zwolle

A medieval gate and a canal

The Sassenpoort, built in 1409, is one of the finest surviving city gates in the Netherlands, and the Thorbeckegracht, a canal lined with old houses and trees along one edge of the old town, gives you water, bridges and reflections. They're a few minutes apart.

A moat full of parks

The Stadsgracht circles the old town, and the parks along it, like the Ter Pelkwijkpark, give families and couples green space, water and old trees without leaving the centre.

A bookshop in a church

Waanders In de Broeren is a bookshop in a fifteenth-century church, with the vaulted ceiling and stained glass kept intact. It's a lovely, unusual rainy-day option, but it's a shop, so ask the staff first.

Best time of day

In the centre, early morning is quietest. In the moat parks and at Het Engelse Werk, the last hour before sunset gives warm light across the water. Zwolle is in the north-east, so summer sunsets are late, around 22:05 in June, and in December around 16:30.

Zwolle through the seasons

Spring
Blossom along the moat and fresh green in the parks from April. It's also a good time to combine a shoot with a trip to Giethoorn before the summer crowds.
Summer
Long evenings, with café terraces around the Grote Markt and the Thorbeckegracht.
Autumn
The trees along the moat turn gold, making it a good season for family photos.
Winter
Short days. The Broerenkerk bookshop is a warm backup, and the centre has festive lights in December.

Weather and the rain plan

Zwolle has inland weather with some wind across the IJssel. The bookshop and covered passages give brief shelter. For outdoor sessions, agree a backup date with your photographer.

Getting there and around

From Amsterdam, direct intercity trains via Lelystad take about an hour. Steenwijk, the station for Giethoorn, is about half an hour further by train. The old centre is about 10 minutes' walk from the station.

Local rules and etiquette

The basilica is a working church; ask before shooting inside. Waanders In de Broeren is a shop; ask the staff first. For wedding photos at the town hall, check the municipality's rules for photography during the ceremony.
