How much does family photography cost in Haarlem?

A family photoshoot in Haarlem starts from €250 for about an hour at one location, such as the Haarlemmerhout, the Spaarne near Molen De Adriaan or the Kennemerduinen. Adding a second location, a larger group or a longer session costs more. Your final quote depends on the photographer, group size, date and duration.

Haarlem gives families three very different backdrops within 15 minutes of each other: the old centre with the Grote Kerk and the Spaarne, the Haarlemmerhout woods on the south side, and the dunes of the Kennemerland national park leading to the beach at Bloemendaal. It is also 15 minutes from Amsterdam by train, which is why many visiting families choose it over the capital.

For a single one-hour session, pick one. The centre and the Haarlemmerhout are about 15 minutes' walk apart, so combining them works for a 90-minute session. The dunes are a separate trip by car or bus.

The old town with children

The centre is compact and mostly car-free around the Grote Markt, which makes it easier with kids than central Amsterdam. Good spots:

  • Molen De Adriaan on the Spaarne: a windmill in the middle of the city, best photographed from the opposite bank near the Catharijnebrug.
  • The Spaarne quays, with the white Gravestenenbrug drawbridge and the old warehouses.
  • Small courtyards (hofjes) such as the Proveniershof. They are residential, often with fixed opening hours and a request for quiet; keep it to a few calm photos and respect any "no photography" signs.

Saturday is market day on the Grote Markt, which makes it lively but busy. Weekday mornings are calmer.

Dunes and beach: timing and wind

The Kennemerduinen stretch from Haarlem to the sea, with sandy paths, pine forest and open dunes. Sessions here feel like a holiday, and the beach at Bloemendaal faces west, so the evening sun comes straight off the sea.

  • In June, sunset is around 22:00, too late for most young children. An 18:00–19:00 session in the dunes still gives good light.
  • The national park has its own rules. Stay on marked paths in protected areas, and check whether commercial photography needs permission from the park managers.
  • The coast is windy. The pine woods and dune valleys are sheltered; save the open beach for the last 15 minutes.
  • Bloemendaal beach clubs are busy on summer evenings, so walk a little north or south for empty sand.

In spring, the bulb fields between Haarlem and Lisse bloom roughly from late March to early May, with tulips peaking mid-April. See tulip field photoshoots if that is what you have in mind.

Practical tips

  • Getting here: trains from Amsterdam Centraal to Haarlem run many times an hour and take about 15 minutes. The centre is 10 minutes' walk from the station. Parking garages near the Grote Markt are paid.
  • Buggies: the Haarlemmerhout and Elswout are easy; cobbles in the centre are manageable; the dunes are sandy.
  • Rain: light drizzle is fine under the trees. For steady rain, reschedule; agree how that works when you book.
  • Outfits: soft, earthy colours suit the dunes and woods; the old town handles stronger colours.

Haarlem Family Photographer: questions

How much does a family photographer cost in Haarlem?

From €250 for about an hour at one location. Larger groups, a second location or a longer session cost more.

Is Haarlem a good option if we are staying in Amsterdam?

Yes. It is about 15 minutes by train and quieter, and you can choose between the old town, woods and dunes.

Can we do family photos on the beach near Haarlem?

Yes, Bloemendaal aan Zee and the Kennemerduinen are a short drive or bus ride away. Plan for wind and a later start in summer.

Can we include the windmill in our photos?

Molen De Adriaan on the Spaarne photographs well from the opposite bank. It is in the city centre, so it combines easily with the old town.

Are the hofjes open for photos?

Some are open to visitors at set times; they are private homes, so be quiet and brief and follow any signs. They are not suitable for a full family session.
