Best Tulip Field Photoshoot Locations Near Amsterdam
Most Dutch tulip fields are working farms you may not walk into. Here are the farms in the bulb region that do let visitors and photographers in, when to go, and how to behave in the rows.

The short answer
The best tulip field photoshoots near Amsterdam happen in the Bollenstreek (bulb region) between Haarlem and Leiden, about 30 to 45 minutes away. Most fields are private production land you may only photograph from the road, so book a farm that lets visitors in, such as De Tulperij in Voorhout, The Tulip Barn near Lisse or Tulip Experience Amsterdam in Noordwijkerhout. Fields usually peak from early to late April.
The tulip fields you see in photographs are mostly in the Bollenstreek, the bulb-growing strip of land between Haarlem and Leiden, centred on Lisse, Hillegom, Voorhout and Noordwijkerhout. It is 30 to 45 minutes from Amsterdam by car or train. The catch is that almost every field there is a working farm. You can photograph from the road, but walking into the rows damages the bulbs and is trespassing.
So the practical answer to "where can I do a tulip field photoshoot?" is: at a farm that has set part of its land aside for visitors, or by arrangement with a grower. Below are the ones we have checked, what each offers, and how to make the most of the few weeks the flowers are out.
When do the tulip fields bloom?
The season is short and depends on the weather.
| Period | What you see |
|---|---|
| Mid-March to early April | Crocuses, then daffodils and hyacinths; early tulips in sheltered spots |
| Early April to late April | Main tulip bloom in the bulb region; the usual peak |
| Late April to early May | Late varieties; many production fields already topped |
| After mid-May | Show gardens close; fields are bare or green |
"Topped" matters. Growers grow tulips for the bulb, not the flower, so once the flowers have been out for a while they cut the heads off (the Dutch word is koppen) to send the plant's energy back into the bulb. A field that was solid red on Monday can be green stalks by Thursday. Show gardens at visitor farms are kept in flower for longer, which is one more reason to shoot there.
A warm March pulls the peak forward; a cold spring pushes it back. Keep your dates flexible if you can, and read our spring photoshoot guide for how the season plays out in the city too.
Farms that welcome visitors and photographers
We only list farms whose own websites say you may enter the flowers. Details are from their sites as of September 2026; check dates and prices when tickets go on sale.
De Tulperij, Voorhout
A family-run bulb farm on the Oude Herenweg in Voorhout. You buy a ticket for a time slot to go into the daffodil and tulip fields, and a member of staff walks you out from the big barn; you then have more than 45 minutes in the field for photos. The show garden and the pick-your-own garden are free to visit (you pay for the tulips you pick). In 2026 the season ran from 19 March to 10 May, open 09:00–17:30 daily. Parking is free and dogs on a lead are welcome.
Good for: shoots that want a real production field rather than a designed garden, and families.
The Tulip Barn, near Lisse
A tulip garden and field on the Lisse–Hillegom side of the region, with photo props (an old tractor, a painted vintage car) set among the beds. A ticket covers the tulip garden and their production field. The 2027 season is announced as 25 March to 9 May, and tickets for 2027 go on sale in December. Their FAQ says it is about a 15-minute walk from Hillegom station, and drones are not allowed.
Good for: couples and solo shoots that want colour blocks and a few playful props.
Tulip Experience Amsterdam, Noordwijkerhout
Despite the name, it is in the bulb region, not Amsterdam. It is a grower's farm with a large walk-in tulip garden, a museum section and indoor tulip picking. You are allowed into the specially laid-out tulip garden (unlike their production fields). Announced dates for 2027 are 18 March to 9 May.
Two details make it interesting for photoshoots:
- On selected days in April and May it stays open until 21:00 for evening light, at the price of a regular ticket.
- Private tulip-field shoots in the garden can be arranged Monday to Thursday between 07:00 and 08:00, before opening, by contacting the farm.
Public transport: train to Hillegom, then bus 22 towards Leiden to the Ruigenhoek stop and a ten-minute walk. Drones are not allowed.
Good for: sunrise and sunset shoots, the only verified early slot of the three.

Keukenhof and the roadside fields
Keukenhof is a designed garden, not a tulip field, and its park regulations do not allow professional photoshoots or commercial use of images without Keukenhof's written permission. See our Keukenhof photoshoot guide for exactly what that means.
The fields along the roads around Lisse, Hillegom and Noordwijkerhout are free to look at and photograph from the road or verge. Keukenhof's own FAQ is clear on this: you may not walk into the bulb fields, which are the growers' private property. For a shoot, that means standing on the verge with the field behind you. It can look good with a longer lens, but you won't get the "standing in the rows" shot.
Field etiquette
Whether you are at a visitor farm or on a verge:
- Stay on the paths between beds, and only step into rows where the farm says you may.
- Don't pick flowers in fields or show gardens. Farms with picking gardens sell them.
- No drones. All three farms above ban them, as does Keukenhof.
- Clean shoes. Some growers ask visitors not to bring soil in from other fields because bulb diseases spread easily.
- Park legally. Stopping on narrow dike roads to take pictures annoys farmers and blocks tractors.
- Don't lie down in the rows or sit on the plants for the "floating in tulips" shot. Photographers get that look with angle and lens, not by flattening flowers.

Sunrise, sunset and the wind
Mid-April sunrise in the bulb region is around 06:45 and sunset around 20:30. Low sun from the side lights up the petals; midday sun from above flattens them. The difficulty is access: most visitor farms open at 08:00 or later and close by 17:30 or 19:00. Tulip Experience Amsterdam's early private slot and its extended evening hours are the verified ways to shoot in the good light inside the flowers. Otherwise, roadside fields at sunrise work well, as long as you stay on the road.
The bulb region is flat and close to the dunes and the North Sea, so it is almost always windy. Tulips move, hair moves, skirts move. Bring a hair tie, avoid long loose veils, and plan warm layers: a sunny April day can be 16°C at noon and 5°C at 07:00.
Travel times from Amsterdam
| Destination | By train and bus | By car |
|---|---|---|
| Hillegom (for The Tulip Barn) | About 30–40 minutes to Hillegom, then walk | About 35–45 minutes |
| Voorhout (De Tulperij) | Train to Voorhout, then local walk or taxi | About 40–50 minutes |
| Noordwijkerhout (Tulip Experience) | Train to Hillegom, bus 22 to Ruigenhoek | About 40–50 minutes |
Times vary with connections and traffic, and spring weekends clog the small roads around Lisse. Check the NS journey planner or 9292 on the day. Many people combine the trip with a stop in Haarlem or Leiden on the way.
What to wear in the tulips
Pick one colour that contrasts with the field rather than matching it. White, cream and pale blue work against red and pink tulips; a deep colour works against white and yellow. A plain dress or shirt reads better than a busy print against thousands of flowers. Our what to wear guide has more.
Cost
A tulip field photoshoot through TulipFrame starts from €250. The quote depends on the farm, travel time from Amsterdam, the time of day and the length of the session. Farm entry tickets for you (and usually the photographer) are paid on top.
Questions
Can I walk into tulip fields in the Netherlands?
Not into ordinary production fields. They are private farmland and walking in damages the bulbs; you may photograph from the road. Some farms, such as De Tulperij, The Tulip Barn and Tulip Experience Amsterdam, sell tickets that let you into designated fields or gardens.
When is the best time for a tulip field photoshoot?
Usually early to late April, depending on the weather. Early-season visits see daffodils and hyacinths; late visits may find production fields already topped. Visitor farms keep show gardens in bloom longer.
How far are the tulip fields from Amsterdam?
The bulb region around Lisse, Hillegom, Voorhout and Noordwijkerhout is roughly 30 to 50 minutes from Amsterdam by car or public transport, depending on where you go and your connections.
Can I do a sunrise tulip photoshoot?
Most visitor farms open at 08:00 or later. Tulip Experience Amsterdam offers private shoots in its tulip garden Monday to Thursday from 07:00 to 08:00 on request, and extended evening hours on selected days. Otherwise, sunrise shoots happen from the road beside a field.
How much does a tulip field photoshoot cost?
A tulip field photoshoot through TulipFrame starts from €250. The quote depends on the location, travel from Amsterdam, time of day and session length. Farm entry tickets are extra.
Are there tulip fields in Amsterdam itself?
No. Amsterdam has tulips in parks and at the flower market in April, but the fields are in the bulb region between Haarlem and Leiden and further north in North Holland.
