How much does family photography cost in Delft?

Family photography in Delft starts from €250 for about an hour in the old centre, typically the Markt, a quiet stretch of the Oude Delft and the Oostpoort, with edited photos in an online gallery. Larger groups, extended family, longer sessions or a second location cost more. Your final quote depends on the photographer, the number of people, the date and the duration.

Delft suits families because everything is close. The Markt, the oldest canal in town and the city gate are all within a ten-minute walk of each other, so small legs and pushchairs are not worn out before the photos begin. The streets are quieter than Amsterdam's, and on a weekday morning you can have a canal almost to yourselves.

Many families who book here are staying in The Hague or Rotterdam, each about 10–15 minutes away by train, or live in the region and want photos somewhere with more character than the local park. Tell us who is coming and we match you with a photographer who works in Delft.

A route paced for children

A typical family session moves slowly between three places, with time to play in between.

  1. The Markt. Meet at the statue of Hugo de Groot in the middle of the square, which is easy for everyone to find. Do the full group photos first, with the Nieuwe Kerk or the red-shuttered Stadhuis behind you, while everyone is fresh. Avoid Thursday morning, when the market fills the square.
  2. The Oude Delft. A minute or two away, the oldest canal in the city is lined with trees and calm houses, with the leaning tower of the Oude Kerk at one end. Bridges here are good for a family lined up along a railing, and the quieter quays give children room to walk ahead.
  3. The Oostpoort. Finish at the twin-towered city gate with its white drawbridge. On calm mornings the water reflects the towers, which makes a good final frame.

Arriving by train? Start instead at the Hooikade near the station, the spot usually linked with Vermeer's "View of Delft", or at Molen de Roos, a tall windmill on the old city walls that still turns on many days.

Small children, canals and cobbles

Delft's canals mostly have no railings along the edge, which matters more with a running toddler than with anything else on this page. The photographer will choose spots with a buffer between the quay and the water, and it helps if one adult is free to keep a hand nearby.

Other practical points:

  • Pushchairs. Cobbles and the steps on some bridges make a carrier easier than a buggy for the route itself.
  • Timing around naps. A session that starts after breakfast or after the afternoon nap usually goes better than one squeezed in between.
  • Attention spans. Under-fives tend to give 30–40 good minutes. The photographer front-loads the group pictures and leaves the playful, moving shots for later.
  • Grandparents. Distances are short and mostly flat. Tell us about anyone with limited mobility and the route can be shortened.
  • Snacks and a spare layer solve more problems than any posing trick.

Light, seasons and weather

Mornings are best in the centre: the Markt and canals are quietest before 10:00, and calm water at the Oostpoort gives the best reflections early. Late afternoon suits the Oude Delft, when light lies along the canal.

Each season changes the look. Spring brings blossom and fresh leaves on the canals from mid-April. Summer gives a full canopy, which is shady and comfortable for children but darker under the trees. Autumn turns the lime trees on the Oude Delft yellow. In winter the light fades early, so a December session works best around 14:00–15:00.

Delft is a few kilometres inland, so it gets coastal showers without the beach wind. Overcast days suit it well, because soft light flatters faces and the brick. In rain, the Stadhuis arcade and covered passages give a few minutes of shelter; for a properly wet day, most photographers suggest moving to another morning, which you agree when you book.

Getting there and local courtesy

Trains from Den Haag Centraal and Rotterdam Centraal reach Delft in about 10–15 minutes, and tram 1 runs from The Hague and Scheveningen. From Amsterdam it is about an hour. Parking in the old centre is limited; the garage at the station is the easiest option with children and bags.

Delft's centre is residential. Canal houses are homes, and people live in the Oostpoort, so the photographer keeps you on the bridges and paths and off doorsteps. The churches charge admission and have their own photography rules.

Staying on the coast? A Delft morning pairs well with an afternoon on the beach at Scheveningen, and the family photographer in The Hague page covers the city next door. For what a family session includes, see family photography.

Delft Family Photographer: questions

How much does a family photographer cost in Delft?

From €250 for about an hour. Bigger groups, extended family, longer sessions or a second location increase the quote. See pricing.

Is Delft suitable for a shoot with toddlers?

Yes. The route is short and flat, and the photographer keeps you away from canal edges, most of which have no railings. A carrier is easier than a pushchair on the cobbles.

Can grandparents with limited mobility join?

Usually, yes. Distances in the centre are short and mostly flat, and the route can be shortened. Mention it in your request.

What time of day is best for a family session in Delft?

Morning, when the Markt and canals are quiet and the water at the Oostpoort is calm. Avoid Thursday morning on the Markt, which is market day.

Can we combine Delft with the beach?

Yes. Scheveningen is reachable by tram 1. Mention it in your request so the extra time and travel are included in the quote.
