Nijmegen calls itself the oldest city in the Netherlands, and it sits on a ridge above the Waal, the country's busiest river. The Waalkade along the water, the Valkhof park on the hill above and two very different bridges, the 1930s Waalbrug and the modern De Oversteek, give the city its skyline. Just east, the Ooijpolder opens into flat, green floodplain with dykes, grazing horses and huge skies.
Most photo requests here come from the city and the region: students at Radboud University wanting graduation photos, young families, couples and weddings. There are few tourist-shoot bookings, apart from the week of the Four Days Marches in July, when the city fills with walkers from around the world.
Why photograph in Nijmegen
A river city with a view
Nijmegen is one of the few Dutch cities where you can look down on a river from a hill. From the Valkhof park you see the Waal, the bridges and the flat land beyond. Down at the Waalkade you are right at the water's edge, with barges passing.
Two bridges, two eras
The arched Waalbrug from 1936 and De Oversteek, opened in 2013, frame the city. De Oversteek has pairs of lights on top that switch on at dusk one after another at walking pace, a memorial to the soldiers who crossed the river in 1944. At blue hour it makes a moving, and very photogenic, backdrop.
Floodplains on the doorstep
The Ooijpolder, just east, is classic Dutch river landscape: dykes, meadows, old farms, horses and water. It is the local go-to for engagement and family sessions with a natural feel, and it's reachable by bike from the centre.

The riverfront promenade below the old town, with terraces, barges and the Waalbrug in view. It is broad and open, which gives room for walking shots with the river as a backdrop.
Best time: Summer evenings, when the sun sets down the river to the west.
Tip: The Waalkade floods occasionally at very high water in winter. Check the conditions if the river is high.

Valkhof Park
A wooded hilltop park above the Waal, with the remains of an emperor's palace: the Romanesque Sint-Nicolaaskapel and the ruined apse known as the Barbarossa ruin. There are views over the river from the Belvédère, and old trees give shade.
Best time: Late afternoon, when light comes through the trees and across the river.

De Oversteek and the Waalbrug
Nijmegen's two bridges over the Waal. The 1936 steel arch of the Waalbrug and the modern arch of De Oversteek, with its 48 pairs of lights that switch on one by one at dusk in memory of the soldiers who crossed the river in 1944. From the riverbanks, both give strong, graphic frames.
Best time: Blue hour, when De Oversteek's lights come on.
Tip: The bridges carry traffic. Shoot from the riverbanks and footpaths rather than the road deck.
Lent
Spiegelwaal and Veur-Lent

Spiegelwaal and Veur-Lent
A new side channel of the Waal dug as part of the Room for the River flood project, creating an island with bridges, open water, grassy banks and small beaches. It is modern, open and full of light, a very different feel from the old town.
Best time: Sunset in summer, when the water reflects the sky.

Ooijpolder

Ooijpolder
Floodplain landscape east of the city, with dykes, meadows, old farmhouses, grazing horses and cattle, and water. It's flat and wide open, which suits romantic, windswept couple photos and relaxed family sessions.
Best time: Sunrise or sunset, when low light comes across the flat land.
Tip: Paths on the dyke are shared with cyclists. Some of the land is grazed by free-roaming animals, so keep your distance.

Stevenskerk and Grote Markt

Stevenskerk and Grote Markt
The Gothic Stevenskerk towers over the old town, and the Grote Markt next to it has historic facades, including the Waag, and the Kerkboog, a vaulted passage leading to the church. It is the most traditional-looking part of Nijmegen.
Best time: Morning, before the market and terraces are busy.
Centrum
Kronenburgerpark
Best time of day
The Waal flows west, so sunsets on the river side are the classic. At dusk, De Oversteek's lights make a bonus blue-hour frame. In the Ooijpolder, early morning mist is common from late summer onwards. Sunset is around 22:00 in June and 16:30 in December.
Nijmegen through the seasons
- Spring
- The Ooijpolder turns green and lambs appear in the fields. The parks are fresh in April and May.
- Summer
- The Four Days Marches and the Vierdaagsefeesten fill the city for a week in mid-July. It is lively, but calm shoots are hard. Otherwise, summer evenings on the Waalkade are lovely.
- Autumn
- Misty mornings on the floodplains and gold colour in the Valkhof. It is a good season for engagement photos.
- Winter
- Short days. The river can rise and flood the floodplains, which is dramatic to photograph but check access.
Weather and the rain plan
Nijmegen has changeable inland weather, and the river and floodplains can be windy. In rain, arcades around the Grote Markt and the Kerkboog passage give some shelter. For outdoor sessions, agree a backup date with your photographer.
Getting there and around
Trains from Amsterdam take about 1 hour 20 to 1 hour 30 minutes, and Arnhem is about 15 minutes away. The Valkhof and the Waalkade are 10–15 minutes' walk from the station. The Ooijpolder is best reached by car or bike; it's about 15 minutes from the centre.
Local rules and etiquette
De Oversteek's lights and the areas around the bridges are war memorials: keep it respectful. Parts of the Ooijpolder are grazed by free-roaming animals, so keep your distance and follow the signs. During the Four Days Marches in July, the city is closed to traffic in many places, so plan around it.
