's-Hertogenbosch Photographers

Den Bosch: a fortified Brabant town with a river running beneath its houses and a cathedral full of stone creatures.

How much does a photographer cost in 's-Hertogenbosch?

A couple photoshoot in Den Bosch starts from €180 and engagement photography from €300. Family photography starts from €250, proposal photography from €350 and civil wedding photography from €600, with full wedding coverage from €1,500. Most sessions in the old centre take one to two hours on foot. The final quote depends on the photographer, the length of the session, the number of people and the date.

's-Hertogenbosch, which almost everyone calls Den Bosch, is the capital of North Brabant and one of the best-preserved fortified towns in the Netherlands. Its ramparts still wrap around the old centre, and the Binnendieze, a network of narrow waterways, runs between and underneath the houses. Some stretches are covered, so boats pass through tunnels under streets and buildings.

For photos, that makes Den Bosch a compact, walkable alternative to Amsterdam's canals with a fraction of the visitors. Couples shoot along the open water at Uilenburg, families walk the city walls with the green Bossche Broek meadows beyond, and wedding couples come for the Sint-Janskathedraal. You can hold a Bossche bol, the town's chocolate-covered cream bun, in a photo if you like, but the architecture is the real reason to come.

Why photograph in 's-Hertogenbosch

Water in unexpected places

The Binnendieze is what sets Den Bosch apart. Houses were built right over it, so you get back walls rising straight out of the water, little footbridges and arches that you won't find in canal cities built on a grid. The open stretch at Uilenburg is the easiest to photograph from street level.

A cathedral with personality

The Sint-Janskathedraal is Brabantine Gothic at its most elaborate. Look closely at the flying buttresses and you will see dozens of small carved figures sitting on them, musicians, animals and odd little people, including a modern angel with a mobile phone added during a restoration. As a backdrop for a couple photoshoot or a wedding, it gives you scale and detail in the same frame.

Walls and meadows

Unlike most Dutch cities, Den Bosch's southern edge still meets open, low-lying land. From the ramparts at Bastion Oranje you look over the Bossche Broek, a nature area of wet meadows, with the cathedral tower behind you. It gives a family or engagement session two very different looks within a ten-minute walk.

Best photography locations in 's-Hertogenbosch

  1. 01 · Binnenstad

    Uilenburg and the Binnendieze

Uilenburg is the spot where the Binnendieze runs open between houses whose back walls rise straight out of the water, with small bridges and café terraces along the edge. It is Den Bosch's most photographed corner, and the narrow scale suits close, intimate couple shots.

Best time: Early morning, before the terraces set up and while the water is still.

Tip: The covered tunnel sections can only be seen from the tour boats, so a shoot there is not practical. Stick to the open stretches and street bridges. Tour boats pass regularly in season, so time your frames between them.

  2. Brown castle

    02 · Binnenstad

    Sint-Janskathedraal and Parade

The cathedral's flying buttresses are covered in small carved figures, and the tree-lined Parade square in front of it gives you room to step back and fit the whole building into the frame. It is a natural stop for wedding couples leaving the ceremony and for portraits that need grandeur without a crowd of tourists.

Best time: Morning, when the Parade side is in soft light. Evenings are good in summer, when the stone warms up.

Tip: The cathedral is a working church. Photography during services is not appropriate, so ask the cathedral before planning anything inside.

  3. 03 · Binnenstad

    Markt

A triangular market square with the town hall, gabled houses and a statue of Jheronimus Bosch, the painter who took his name from the town. It is lively and very Brabant, good for a relaxed walking-and-talking set rather than a quiet, posed portrait.

Best time: Early on non-market days. On market days, the square is full of stalls from the morning.

  4. A building with a sign on the side of it

    04 · Stadswallen

    City walls and Bastion Oranje

A walk along the restored ramparts on the south side of the centre, ending at Bastion Oranje with its replica cannon, Boze Griet. You get brick walls, grass slopes and water below, and the path is wide and car-free, so it works well for families with small children.

Best time: The last hour before sunset, when the light comes low across the meadows from the west.

  5. 05 · South of the old town

    Bossche Broek

Low, wet meadows directly below the city walls, crossed by paths. From here the cathedral tower rises above the ramparts, a view that has barely changed in centuries. It is open, green and quiet, and ideal when you want nature and the old town in one picture.

Best time: Sunrise and sunset. In autumn and early spring, morning mist often lies over the fields.

Tip: Parts of it are wet or flooded in winter. Waterproof shoes help.

Best time of day

The old centre is small and busy with shoppers from late morning, so the first two hours of daylight are the best time for canal-side shots at Uilenburg. The walls and the Bossche Broek face open country to the south and west, so they come into their own in the last hour before sunset: around 21:30 in June and 16:15 in December.

's-Hertogenbosch through the seasons

Spring
Fresh green on the walls and in the Bossche Broek from April. Carnival, when Den Bosch turns into "Oeteldonk" and the whole town dresses up, falls in February or early March. It is great for street atmosphere but hopeless for a calm shoot.
Summer
Long evenings on the ramparts and café terraces at Uilenburg. The Binnendieze boat tours are at their busiest, so plan canal shots early.
Autumn
A good season for couples. The light is soft, the trees along the walls turn gold, and there are fewer day-trippers than in summer.
Winter
Short days, but the cathedral and the old centre look good under grey skies. December brings lights in the shopping streets.

Weather and the rain plan

Den Bosch has typical inland Dutch weather: frequent showers, milder wind than the coast. Covered spots near the cathedral and the arcades around the Markt can save a session in a short shower. For longer rain, photographers usually suggest moving the date. Agree this when you book.

Getting there and around

Direct intercity trains take about an hour from Amsterdam Centraal, about 30 minutes from Utrecht and about 20 minutes from Eindhoven. The station is a 10-minute walk from the Markt, and the whole old centre is walkable, so you do not need a car. If you drive, use a car park on the edge of the centre, as the inner streets are narrow and busy.

Local rules and etiquette

The cathedral is a place of worship: keep shoots outside or ask first. Around Uilenburg people live right on the water, so keep the group small and do not block café terraces or doorways. For weddings, check the town hall's requirements for photography during the ceremony with the municipality's wedding desk.

Photography in 's-Hertogenbosch: questions

Is Den Bosch the same as 's-Hertogenbosch?

Yes. 's-Hertogenbosch is the official name, meaning "the Duke's forest", and Den Bosch is what nearly everyone says, including the station announcements. When you fill in a request, either name is fine.

How much does a couple photoshoot in Den Bosch cost?

A couple photoshoot starts from €180. A typical route through Uilenburg, the cathedral and the city walls fits into one to one and a half hours. The final price depends on the photographer, how long you book and the date.

Can we be photographed on a Binnendieze boat?

The covered sections of the Binnendieze are only open to the guided tour boats, which run on fixed schedules with other passengers, so a photoshoot on board isn't really practical. The open stretch at Uilenburg is where photographers shoot the water, from the street and the bridges.

Where are the best spots for a proposal in Den Bosch?

The ramparts at Bastion Oranje at sunset, with the Bossche Broek below, are quiet and open, which is ideal for a photographer hiding at a distance. Uilenburg is more romantic but busier. Proposal photography starts from €350, and the planning call covers where the photographer will stand.

Is carnival a good time for a photoshoot?

Only if you want carnival in the pictures. During the carnival days in February or March the town becomes "Oeteldonk", streets are packed and almost everyone is in costume. For a calm couple or family shoot, choose another week.
