Windmill Photoshoot

A photoshoot with Dutch windmills at Zaanse Schans, Kinderdijk, Haarlem, Schiedam or in Amsterdam itself.

What does windmill photoshoot cost?

A windmill photoshoot is a session with historic Dutch windmills as the backdrop — most often at Zaanse Schans near Amsterdam or at Kinderdijk near Rotterdam. It typically lasts 45 minutes to 90 minutes and starts from €250, which reflects travel to the mills. Your final quote depends on the location, date, time of day, group size and duration.

Windmills are the other half of the Dutch picture postcard. There are still hundreds of them across the country, but a handful of places combine several mills, water and space to photograph them well. Zaanse Schans is the easiest from Amsterdam. Kinderdijk, a UNESCO World Heritage site, has 19 mills in a row along the polder canals. And there are single mills inside cities that make a quick, quieter option.

We match your request with a photographer who knows the mill location you choose and its current rules.

Rules at Zaanse Schans and Kinderdijk

Zaanse Schans is a residential and working area that is free to walk around. Its own guidance says private and wedding photos in the open area do not need permission, while commercial shoots and photography inside a mill, museum or workshop need advance permission from Stichting De Zaanse Schans. Drones need permission too. Rules can change, so check the current rules on the Zaanse Schans website before your date.

Kinderdijk is free to walk along the main paths; the museum mills and boat trips need a ticket. Drones need a special permit. We could not confirm a current policy for portrait sessions, so your photographer should check with Kinderdijk before the shoot. People live in several of the mills — stay on the paths and respect private property.

Timing and light

Zaanse Schans fills up with tour coaches from mid-morning. The two good windows are:

  • Early morning, when the sun rises behind the mills (seen from the Zaandijk bank they turn into silhouettes) and the paths are empty.
  • The hour before sunset, when low western light falls warmly on the mills and green houses and many day-trippers have left.

At Kinderdijk the mills face open polder, so light is similar: sunrise and late afternoon beat midday. In winter, sunset is about 16:30 and mornings start late, which suits photographers well. Mist on autumn mornings can be striking.

Combining windmills with other spots

A windmill session combines naturally with other places:

  • Zaanse Schans + Amsterdam canals on the same day, via a 17-minute train
  • Kinderdijk + Rotterdam's architecture, or a waterbus from Rotterdam
  • Molen de Adriaan + Haarlem's Grote Markt
  • In April, a windmill + tulip field photoshoot in the bulb region, where a few mills stand among the fields

What to wear and how to handle the weather

Windmills stand where the wind is, so expect a breeze even when the city is calm. Mid-length dresses, coats and knitwear photograph well; very full skirts and loose hats are a battle.

Colours that work at Zaanse Schans: cream, rust, mustard and soft blue sit well with the dark-green houses and the brown mills. At Kinderdijk the backdrop is mostly sky, water and reeds, so almost any colour works; a single strong colour stands out nicely in the flat landscape.

Paths at Kinderdijk are long and straight: the famous views are a walk from the entrance. Wear comfortable shoes and allow time. Bring a warm layer outside summer; the polder gets cold once the sun drops.

Windmill Photoshoot: questions

Where is the best place for a windmill photoshoot?

Zaanse Schans is easiest from Amsterdam; Kinderdijk has the most mills together and is closest to Rotterdam. For a quick session in town, try Molen de Adriaan in Haarlem or De Gooyer in Amsterdam.

Do I need permission to do a photoshoot at Zaanse Schans?

According to Zaanse Schans's own guidance, private and wedding photos in the open area do not need permission; commercial shoots and photos inside mills or museums do. Check the current rules before your date.

Can we fly a drone at the windmills?

Not without permission. Both Zaanse Schans and Kinderdijk require prior permission or a permit for drones.

How do I get to Zaanse Schans from Amsterdam?

Take the Sprinter from Amsterdam Centraal towards Uitgeest and get off at Zaandijk Zaanse Schans, about 17 minutes, then walk roughly 15 minutes across the bridge over the Zaan.

When is Zaanse Schans least busy?

Early in the morning and in the last hour or two of daylight. Midday, particularly in spring and summer, is crowded with tour groups.
