Amsterdam Photoshoot in Spring: Blossom, Tulips & King's Day

Blossom in the Amsterdamse Bos, tulips an hour away and King's Day in the middle of it all. How to time a spring photoshoot in Amsterdam.

The short answer

Spring is Amsterdam's most popular photoshoot season. Cherry blossom usually peaks in early April, and tulips in the bulb fields around Lisse typically peak mid to late April. Keukenhof opens from roughly late March to early May. Avoid King's Day (27 April) for a quiet shoot, expect changeable weather, and book popular April weekends early.

Spring is when many people picture Amsterdam: blossom over the canals, tulips in window boxes and fields of colour just outside the city. It is also when the weather is least predictable and the city is at its busiest outside summer. A little timing goes a long way.

March: first green, first light

Early March still feels like winter, with highs around 9–10 °C. Days lengthen fast: sunset moves from about 18:15 at the start of the month to around 18:45 by mid-month. Then, on the last Sunday of March, the clocks go forward an hour, and sunset jumps to about 20:00.

  • Crocuses and daffodils appear in the parks and along the canals.
  • Crowds are still moderate, especially on weekdays.
  • Sunrise is around 07:00 before the clock change and 07:15 after it: easy for dawn sessions.

Early April: cherry blossom

The best-known blossom spot is the Bloesempark in the Amsterdamse Bos, a grove of Japanese cherry trees donated by the Japan Women's Club. Bloom is typically early April, lasting only a week or two, and depends entirely on the weather. Weekends at peak bloom are very busy; weekday mornings are far better.

Closer to the centre, blossom trees appear along several canals, in the Westerpark and around the Museumplein. Your photographer will know which trees are out that week.

Mid to late April: tulips

Tulips in the city are mostly in pots, window boxes and planted beds, and the Flower Market on the Singel sells bulbs rather than blooming fields. For fields of colour, you go to the bulb region between Haarlem and Leiden, around Lisse, about 40 minutes from Amsterdam by car.

  • Tulip fields usually peak mid to late April, earlier after a warm March. Farmers cut the flower heads once they peak, so the window is short. Stay on paths and field edges; do not walk into the rows, which is private farmland.
  • Keukenhof is a garden, not a field, open only in spring. The announced dates for 2027 are 18 March to 9 May; check the official site before planning. Its rules on professional photography differ from public streets, so confirm them with your photographer.

Details are in our tulip field photoshoot guide and Keukenhof photoshoot guide. A tulip field photoshoot starts from €250, with the final quote depending on travel and duration.

27 April: King's Day

King's Day (Koningsdag) is on 27 April, or 26 April when the 27th is a Sunday. It is the biggest street party of the year: the canals fill with boats playing music, the Vondelpark hosts a children's free market, and the Jordaan and much of the centre become a flea market. Hundreds of thousands of extra people arrive in the city.

  • For a calm couple or proposal shoot: avoid it, and be careful with the evening before (King's Night) too.
  • For documentary, fun or friends' photos: it can be brilliant. Wear orange.
  • Public transport is crowded and some tram routes change. Many photographers do not work that day at all.

May: the reliable month

May often has the best spring weather: highs around 17–19 °C, long evenings with sunset around 21:00–21:25, and trees in full fresh green. On 4 May at 20:00 the country holds two minutes of silence for Remembrance Day, and the Dam Square area is closed for the national ceremony; 5 May is Liberation Day, with festivals. Neither usually affects a canal-side shoot away from Dam Square, but be respectful during the silence.

May is our pick for couples who want warmth without summer crowds. See the Amsterdam couple photographer page.

Spring light on the canals

Before the trees fill out in late April, more light reaches the canal houses, and the facades look crisp and bright. By May the canopy closes over the Keizersgracht and Prinsengracht, and the canals become green tunnels with dappled light: lovely, but the shade makes midday sessions harder. For open, sunlit canal scenes, early spring is actually better than summer.

A sample spring trip

Many visitors combine city and flowers. A typical plan over two days in mid-April:

  • Day one, 07:30: a one-hour canal session in the Jordaan and along the Brouwersgracht, before the crowds.
  • Day two, morning: a tulip field session near Lisse. Early arrival means softer light and fewer people on the field edges.
  • Day two, afternoon: Keukenhof as visitors, or a rest.

Splitting the sessions keeps both relaxed and gives you a spare slot if one morning is rained off. Tell us both locations in one request, and we will find a photographer who covers both.

What to wear in spring

  • Light layers: a trench or denim jacket over a dress or shirt.
  • Pastels, cream and soft blue suit blossom; for tulip fields, choose a colour that contrasts with the flowers (cream against red, blue against yellow).
  • Flat or block-heeled shoes. Tulip field paths can be muddy.

Spring crowds, week by week

  • Easter weekend (the date moves each year) brings the first big wave of visitors.
  • Mid to late April combines tulip season, school holidays in several countries and King's Day: the busiest spell of spring.
  • Early May includes Dutch school holidays and the 4–5 May commemorations.
  • Late May and Ascension/Whitsun weekends are busy with domestic visitors; weekdays stay calmer.

If your dates are flexible, the first half of April and the second half of May are usually the easiest balance of bloom, weather and space.

Booking in spring

April weekends are among the most requested dates of the year, especially for tulip sessions and proposals. A few weeks' notice gives you more choice of photographers; see how far in advance to book. Build one spare day into your trip for a rain or wind reschedule.

Questions

When do tulips bloom near Amsterdam?

Tulip fields around Lisse usually peak mid to late April, earlier after a mild March and later after a cold one. Farmers cut the flowers soon after they peak, so the window is short.

Where is the cherry blossom in Amsterdam?

The best-known spot is the Bloesempark in the Amsterdamse Bos, which usually blooms in early April for about one to two weeks. Weekday mornings are much quieter than weekends.

Should I book a photoshoot on King's Day?

Not for a calm or romantic shoot: canals, streets and trams are packed. For fun, documentary-style photos with friends, it can work, but many photographers are not available that day.

Can we shoot at Keukenhof and on the Amsterdam canals on the same day?

It is possible but tiring. The bulb region is roughly 40 minutes from Amsterdam by car, plus time inside the garden. Many people split it into two sessions or two days. Ask your photographer what they recommend.

What is the weather like in Amsterdam in spring?

Changeable. March highs are around 9–10 °C, April around 13–14 °C and May around 17–19 °C, with showers and wind possible on any day.
