The short answer

For most Amsterdam photoshoots, such as couple, solo or family sessions, booking two to four weeks ahead is usually enough. Book four to eight weeks ahead for proposals, tulip season in April and summer weekends, and 9–18 months ahead for a Saturday wedding in summer. Short-notice requests are sometimes possible, especially on weekdays and outside peak season.

How early you need to book depends on two things: the kind of shoot and the date. A Tuesday morning in February is easy to find at a week's notice. A Saturday evening in mid-April, when half of Europe seems to be in Amsterdam for the tulips, is not.

The Amsterdam dates that fill up first

Tulip season (roughly early April to early May, peaking mid-April). Demand for tulip field photoshoots and spring city shoots rises sharply. The exact peak depends on the weather, so allow some flexibility in your dates if the tulips are the point.

King's Day (27 April, or 26 April when the 27th is a Sunday). The city turns into one enormous street party and canal parade. Great to see, hard to photograph a calm portrait in. Most people avoid shooting in the centre that day.

Summer weekends, especially at sunset. In June sunset is around 22:00, and golden hour in the canal ring is popular. Weekend evenings go first.

Pride Amsterdam (late July to early August). The Canal Parade on the Prinsengracht and Amstel closes off a large part of the canal belt for the day.

December. Christmas lights along the canals and the Amsterdam Light Festival draw people for evening shoots, but the days are short: sunset is around 16:30. Plan for an early-afternoon slot or a deliberate after-dark shoot.

If your date is fixed by a trip, book as soon as it is fixed. If you are flexible, a weekday or a quieter month gives you more choice.

Why proposals need more notice

A proposal is the shoot where last-minute planning hurts most. The photographer needs to know the exact spot, the time, how you will arrive, where they will stand and what the signal is. They often visit the spot at the same time of day beforehand to check the light and the crowds. A bridge that is quiet at 08:00 can be busy by 11:00.

Three to six weeks gives time for that, plus a backup plan for rain, which in Amsterdam you should always have. Our guides to the best places to propose in Amsterdam and working with an Amsterdam proposal photographer go through it step by step.

Weddings: why so early?

A photographer can only cover one wedding a day, and summer Saturdays are limited. Couples marrying between May and September often book 9–18 months ahead, sometimes as soon as the venue is confirmed. Weekday and off-season weddings are much easier, and a small civil ceremony on a Thursday can often be arranged at a few months' notice. Newborn and maternity: book by due date

Newborn sessions are usually planned for the first couple of weeks after birth, when babies sleep deeply and curl up easily. Since nobody knows the exact date, photographers book around the due date and confirm the session after the baby arrives. Getting in touch during the second trimester is common. Maternity shoots are often around 30–36 weeks, when the bump shows well but moving about is still comfortable.

Can you book at short notice?

Sometimes, yes. Short-notice requests have the best chance when:

  • the date is a weekday
  • you can be flexible on time, for example a morning instead of sunset
  • the shoot is short and in central Amsterdam
  • it is outside the peak weeks listed above

Send your request with the date, time window and what you want, and say it is short notice. We reply to every request by email, usually within one working day, and we will tell you honestly if we cannot find someone for your date.

Business shoots and events

Office headshots are simple if it is one person, harder if it is thirty people across two floors on a single morning. Book early enough to send a calendar invite round the team and find a room with space and some daylight. For conferences and events, book as soon as the date and venue are confirmed; photographers who cover events often plan several weeks ahead, and September to November and the weeks before the summer break are busy for corporate events. For the price side, see the corporate photography page.

Tourists: book before you fly or once you land?

If you are visiting Amsterdam for a few days, book before you travel. Once you arrive, your time is short, your plans shift and you are trying to arrange things on hotel wifi. Fix the shoot for your second or third day rather than the first: if heavy rain forces a reschedule, you still have time to move it. It also means you have had a day to recover from the journey and find your way around.

What to have ready when you book

  • Date and a time window. "Saturday 18 April, anytime after 16:00" is more useful than "that weekend".
  • Who is in the shoot. Number of adults, children and their ages.
  • What it is for. Holiday photos, a proposal, a gift, business use.
  • Locations you like, or ask for suggestions. The Amsterdam photoshoot locations guide is a good start.
  • A rain plan preference. Reschedule, shoot in the rain with umbrellas, or move somewhere covered.

What about the weather?

Amsterdam weather is changeable in every season, so do not wait for a perfect forecast before booking. Ask how the photographer handles rain when you book: many will move the session to another time or day if heavy rain is forecast, and light rain can give lovely reflections on the canals. Our guide to an Amsterdam photoshoot in the rain covers the options.
