How much does tulip field photoshoot cost in Amsterdam?
A tulip field photoshoot booked from Amsterdam starts from €250 for the shoot itself. Because the fields are 35–45 minutes away by car, most quotes also include travel or transport, so expect the total to be higher than the starting price. Your final quote depends on the photographer, the date in the short bloom season, the location and who arranges transport.
There are no tulip fields in Amsterdam itself. The famous striped fields are in the bulb region between Haarlem and Leiden, around Lisse, Hillegom and Noordwijkerhout, roughly 35–45 minutes by car from the city centre. A tulip photoshoot "in Amsterdam" is really a short trip, and planning it well is mostly about transport, timing and knowing which fields you may enter.
This page is honest about all of that, so you can decide whether you want fields, Keukenhof, or tulips in the city.
Fields, Keukenhof or tulips in the city
You have three options, and they give very different photos.
Open tulip fields. Long stripes of colour to the horizon, farmhouses, sometimes a windmill. This is the classic image. Most fields are working farmland, so you photograph from the verge or the path, not inside the rows. Some farms run paid walk-in fields where you can stand among the flowers; the photographer will know which are open that season.
Keukenhof. Designed gardens near Lisse with millions of bulbs, a windmill and ponds. Every visitor needs a ticket, including the photographer, and professional or commercial shoots are expected to contact Keukenhof in advance. It is very busy from late morning. See our Keukenhof photoshoot guide.
Tulips in Amsterdam. During April, tulips appear in planters and gardens across the city, often as part of the Amsterdam Tulip Festival. It is not a field, but it avoids the trip. Combining canal photos with tulips in town is a good choice for a short stay.
Getting there: what the shoot includes
The simplest arrangement is that the photographer drives you from a meeting point in Amsterdam, or you hire a car or taxi and meet at the field. Ask in your request which option the quote covers.
| Option | Time from central Amsterdam | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Car or taxi | About 35–45 minutes | Most flexible; lets you visit two or three fields |
| Seasonal bus via Schiphol to Keukenhof | About an hour or more | Good for Keukenhof, awkward for fields |
| Rental bikes from Keukenhof or Lisse | Short hops between fields | Lovely if the weather is good; wind can be tough |
For a one-hour shoot, plan about three to four hours door to door. Traffic on spring weekends around Lisse can be slow. More detail in our guide to tulip field photoshoots near Amsterdam.
When the tulips actually bloom
Bloom depends on the weather, so no date is guaranteed. Hyacinths and daffodils come first in late March; tulips usually colour the fields from early April, peaking mid-to-late April. A warm spring brings everything forward; a cold one delays it.
Farmers cut the flower heads off to strengthen the bulbs, which can happen suddenly from late April onward. A field that was red on Tuesday can be green on Thursday. Photographers who work the region check the fields in the days before your shoot, which is one reason to book with someone local.
Light. Sunrise in mid-April is about 06:45 and sunset about 20:40. Early morning gives empty fields and soft light; the evening gives warm side light across the rows. Midday is busiest and harshest.
A sample tulip day
A typical plan for a sunset tulip shoot in mid-April:
| Time | What happens |
|---|---|
| 17:45 | Pick-up in Amsterdam, or meet at the agreed field |
| 18:30 | Arrive in the bulb region; the photographer has checked which fields are in bloom |
| 18:45–19:45 | Shoot at one or two fields, moving by car between them |
| 19:45–20:40 | Golden light as the sun drops; last frames |
| 21:30 | Back in Amsterdam |
A sunrise version starts around 05:45 and has you back in the city for breakfast, with emptier fields and roads. On a weekend in peak bloom, add time for traffic around Lisse.
Field etiquette and practicalities
- Stay out of the rows unless a sign or the farmer says otherwise. Trampling damages the bulbs, which are the farmer's crop. Some farms put up signs, and fines are possible.
- No drones. The bulb region lies close to Schiphol's controlled airspace.
- Wind. The fields are flat and exposed. Bring a layer and expect hair and dresses to move.
- Mud. Verges can be wet; bring shoes you do not mind getting dirty, and change for photos.
- Windmill combo. Some fields have windmills nearby. For a guaranteed windmill backdrop, a separate windmill photoshoot in Zaandam is closer to Amsterdam.

Tulip Field Photoshoot from Amsterdam: questions
Are there tulip fields in Amsterdam?
No. The fields are in the bulb region around Lisse, Hillegom and Noordwijkerhout, about 35–45 minutes by car. In April you will see tulips in planters and gardens across Amsterdam.
How much does a tulip field photoshoot from Amsterdam cost?
The shoot starts from €250. Because the fields are outside the city, transport or travel time is usually added to the quote.
When is the best time for a tulip photoshoot?
Usually mid-to-late April, but bloom depends on the weather. Book a date in April and let the photographer confirm which fields are in flower that week.
Can I walk into the tulip fields for photos?
Not into most fields: they are working farmland. Some farms offer paid walk-in fields. Otherwise, photos are taken from the edge, which still looks like you are among the flowers.
Is Keukenhof or a tulip field better for photos?
Fields give wide stripes of colour and fewer people at sunrise; Keukenhof gives varied garden settings but needs tickets and is crowded from late morning.
Can we do tulips and Amsterdam canals on the same day?
Yes, but plan for travel. A common plan is fields at sunrise and canals in the afternoon, or canals in the morning and fields in the evening light.
