What does romantic photoshoot cost?
A romantic photoshoot is a more intimate, cinematic couples session: slower pacing, closer frames and moody light, usually at golden hour, blue hour or on a quiet morning. It suits couples who want emotional, editorial-style images rather than a relaxed city walk. Sessions start from €180; the final quote depends on duration, timing, location and the photographer.
A romantic photoshoot is about mood more than place. Where a couple photoshoot moves around the city and shows you in it, a romantic session slows down, gets closer, and chooses light for atmosphere: the last warm minutes before sunset, the blue hour when lamps come on along the canals, a foggy winter morning.
It is still natural, not glamour or boudoir. The photographer directs more closely, asks for longer, quieter moments, and edits with a more cinematic look.

What makes it different
| Couple photoshoot | Romantic photoshoot | |
|---|---|---|
| Pace | Walking, several spots | Slower, fewer spots |
| Framing | Wide to medium, lots of city | Medium to close, faces and hands |
| Light | Any good light | Chosen for mood: dusk, blue hour, fog, window light |
| Direction | Light prompts | More guided, quieter moments |
| Editing | Natural | Often warmer or moodier, more cinematic |
Both start from €180. Choose romantic if you want the photos to feel intimate; choose couple if you want a fun, relaxed record of the two of you in a place.
The best light for a romantic session
- Golden hour: low, warm sun, long shadows, glowing hair. Around 21:00–22:00 in June; mid-afternoon in December.
- Blue hour: 20–40 minutes after sunset. Street lamps and canal-house windows light up while the sky is still deep blue. It is the most atmospheric time in Amsterdam, Utrecht or Delft, and the least crowded.
- Mist and fog: common on autumn and winter mornings, softening everything. Unpredictable but beautiful.
- Window light: a hotel room or a café at the end of the day, for indoor frames when it rains.
Our sunrise vs sunset guide goes into the trade-offs.
Settings that suit the mood
- Quiet canals at blue hour: the Reguliersgracht and Leidsegracht in Amsterdam, or the lamp-lit Oudegracht wharves in Utrecht. See Amsterdam canal photoshoot locations.
- Dunes and beach at sunset: the North Sea coast faces west, so sunsets over the water at Scheveningen and Zandvoort are reliable when the sky is clear.
- Small towns after the day-trippers leave: Delft and Giethoorn in the evening.
- A hotel room or apartment for close, warm indoor frames. Ask your hotel before booking, and expect some to decline.
How a romantic session is directed
The photographer's job here is to slow you down. Expect fewer locations and more time in each. A typical session picks one strong setting (a lamp-lit bridge, a stretch of dune, a narrow alley) and works it for twenty minutes: first from a distance, the two of you small against the scene; then closer, with foreheads together, hands, a coat wrapped round both of you; then very close, eyes closed, a whispered sentence.
Prompts are softer and longer than on a regular couple shoot: "hold each other and sway, as if there is music", "tell each other what you noticed first about the other", "stand still and breathe together for ten seconds". They can feel silly for a moment, and then they do not.
The edit follows the mood. Many photographers use a slightly warmer or deeper colour grade, deeper shadows and softer highlights, and a few frames in black and white. If you have a look you love, send an example with your request so we can match you with a photographer whose editing fits.
Getting comfortable
Intimate photos need trust. A good photographer explains each idea before asking, lets you say no, and keeps talking. It helps to tell them in advance how affectionate you are comfortable being in public; the Dutch are relaxed about couples on bridges, but you set the limit. Wear layers you can keep on: blue hour in March or October is cold, and shivering does not look romantic.

Romantic Photoshoot by city
Romantic Photoshoot: questions
Is a romantic photoshoot the same as boudoir?
No. It is intimate in mood, not in clothing. It happens in public or semi-public places, fully dressed.
When is blue hour in the Netherlands?
Roughly 20–40 minutes after sunset: after 22:00 in June, and before 17:30 in December. The photographer will give you exact times for your date.
How is this different from a couple photoshoot?
It is slower, closer and more guided, and it is timed around atmospheric light. Couple shoots are more relaxed city walks.
Can we do it in the rain?
Rain at blue hour, with reflections and an umbrella, can be the most romantic light of all. For heavy rain, you can reschedule or move indoors.
Is it suitable for a proposal?
For the proposal itself, book proposal photography: it includes hidden coverage and planning.
