How much does a photographer cost in Giethoorn?
A tourist photoshoot in Giethoorn starts from €150 and a couple photoshoot from €180. Proposal photography starts from €350 and a family holiday photoshoot from €250. Few photographers live in the village itself, so the quote may include travel. The final quote depends on the photographer, how long you book, the number of people and the date.
Giethoorn is a village without roads in its old centre. Thatched farmhouses sit on little islands connected by more than 170 wooden bridges, and people get around by boat or on foot along the canal. It is one of the most photographed places in the Netherlands, and tourist and couple photoshoots are the main reason people book a photographer here.
It is also very busy. On the busiest days, around 40 a year, between 10,000 and 15,000 visitors come, with the peak between 11:00 and 16:00. Residents live in those houses and gardens, and since 2025 there have been stricter rules for boats. The trick for photos is timing: arrive early, stay on public paths and let the photographer know where the quieter corners are.
Why photograph in Giethoorn
A village of water and thatch
The Dorpsgracht, the village canal, is lined with thatched farmhouses, gardens and wooden bridges, and people get around by boat. It looks like nowhere else in the Netherlands, and it's why people come from around the world.
Boats as part of the shoot
Electric "whisper boats" (fluisterboten) are the typical way to see the village from the water. Since 2025, rental boats may only have electric motors, and there are stricter rules on noise, speed and group sizes. A photographer can shoot you from the bank or a public bridge as you glide past, which is one of the most popular Giethoorn frames. Ask about it when you send your request.
Quieter corners
The Bovenwijde lake, the hamlet of Dwarsgracht and the Weerribben-Wieden National Park around the village offer open water, reeds and big skies without the crowds.

Best time: Early morning or sunset.
Best time of day
Arrive early: before 10:00 the canal is quiet and the water is still. The busiest time is between 11:00 and 16:00. In June, sunrise is before 5:30 and sunset around 22:00, which gives long evenings on the Bovenwijde.
Giethoorn through the seasons
- Spring
- Fresh green and blossom from April. Crowds build towards the summer.
- Summer
- The busiest season, with long evenings. Early mornings are essential.
- Autumn
- Quieter, with soft light and autumn colour. It's a good season for a calmer shoot.
- Winter
- Short days and fewer visitors. The canals rarely freeze hard enough for skating, so don't count on it.
Weather and the rain plan
Giethoorn is flat, open and surrounded by water, so wind is the thing to plan for: it ruffles the canal (no reflections), pushes a boat off its line and makes long hair and dresses hard work. A still, overcast morning is often better than a bright, breezy afternoon. There is almost nowhere to shelter along the footpath, so in real rain the only sensible plan is a backup date, and because it is a long trip for most visitors, agree before you book whether the photographer can move the session to later the same day or the next morning.
Getting there and around
From Amsterdam, take the train to Steenwijk (usually with a change at Zwolle), then bus 70 to Giethoorn (about 15 minutes, hourly). From April to October, bus 270 also runs. The total journey is 2 to 2.5 hours each way. By car, it's about an hour and a half.
Local rules and etiquette
Giethoorn's tourism organisation states that drones are not allowed in the village. The houses, gardens and many of the bridges are private property: don't step into gardens or onto garden furniture, don't use a private bridge as a set, and don't photograph residents recognisably without asking. From the 2025 boating season the municipality tightened the rules for boats (electric motors only on rental boats, stricter limits on noise, speed and large groups, more checks on alcohol), and a new 1,600-metre waterway was dug to take some boat traffic off the old village canal. Rules here have been changing year by year, so check the current situation with the local tourist office before you plan anything elaborate.
