How much does a photographer cost in Volendam?
A photoshoot in Volendam starts from €150 for a short tourist session and from €180 for couples through TulipFrame. Family sessions start from €250. Your quote depends on duration, whether you add Marken or Edam, and travel from Amsterdam. This is different from the quick costume-studio portraits sold on the Dijk.
Volendam is a former fishing village on the Markermeer, about half an hour from Amsterdam by bus. Its heart is the Dijk: a raised harbour promenade lined with fish stalls, cafés and souvenir shops, with wooden fishing boats and the water on one side. Behind it, the old quarter known as the Doolhof (the labyrinth) is a maze of narrow alleys and small brick and wooden houses a few steps below dike level.
Many visitors combine Volendam with Marken, a former island of green wooden houses reached by the Marken Express boat, and with Edam, the quieter cheese town just to the north. Between the three you get harbour, village and small-town canal scenery within a few kilometres.
Why photograph in Volendam
The harbour is the draw: rows of dark-hulled fishing and pleasure boats, the curve of the dike and the wide flat water behind. Volendam faces east over the Gouwzee and Markermeer, so sunrise comes up over the water, while in the evening the harbour is in the shade of the town and the sky over the water turns soft pastel.
The Doolhof behind the dike, and Marken's wooden houses across the water, give a quieter, more authentic village look than the busy promenade. A good session uses the Dijk for a few classic frames and then moves into the side streets.
Best photography locations in Volendam

01 · Centre
Volendam harbour and the Dijk
The harbour promenade with moored boats, the old harbour walls and the Markermeer beyond. The dike is raised, so you can shoot down onto the boats or place people against open water and sky.
Best time: Early morning, when the water faces the rising sun and the shops are still shut. Midday is crowded from spring to autumn.
Tip: The promenade is narrow and busy; the harbour heads and jetties at the ends are calmer.
Behind the Dijk
The Doolhof (old quarter)
02 · Behind the Dijk
The Doolhof (old quarter)
A tight grid of alleys, some only a metre or two wide, with small houses, painted doors and flower pots, sitting lower than the dike. It feels far removed from the souvenir shops just a few metres away.
Best time: Any time of day; the alleys are shaded, so overcast or bright days both work.
Tip: These are homes. Keep voices down, do not block doorways and never shoot through windows.

03 · The Dijk
Traditional costume photo studios
Several studios on the Dijk dress visitors in traditional Volendam costume, including the winged lace cap, and take a posed studio portrait, usually printed while you wait. It is a fun souvenir and quick to do, but it is a studio product, not a location shoot with a photographer who walks with you.
Best time: Any time; allow extra time on busy weekends.
Tip: If you want both, do the costume photo as a separate stop and book your own photographer for the harbour and village. Your photographer does not take the studio portrait and cannot bring the costumes outside.
Marken
Marken: Havenbuurt and Kerkbuurt
04 · Marken
Marken: Havenbuurt and Kerkbuurt
Green and black wooden houses, many built on mounds or on stilts against flooding, clustered around a small harbour and a church. Marken is far quieter than Volendam and more intact.
Best time: Late afternoon, after the boat groups have left.
Tip: The Marken Express boat runs from Volendam from roughly late March to the end of October and takes about 30 minutes. Outside that season, Marken is reached by bus or car over the dike from Monnickendam.

05 · Marken
Paard van Marken lighthouse
A white lighthouse on the eastern tip of Marken, reached by a walk of around half an hour along the dike from the harbour. Open water on three sides and very few people.
Best time: Golden hour; the long dike walk means you usually have it to yourself.
Tip: Exposed and windy. Allow enough time for the walk back and check the last boat if you came on the Marken Express.
Edam
Edam: Kaasmarkt and canals
06 · Edam
Edam: Kaasmarkt and canals
A small, quiet town of canals, drawbridges and gabled houses, with the Kaasmarkt square, the Speeltoren (carillon tower) and the wooden Kwakelbrug. It photographs like a miniature Amsterdam without the crowds.
Best time: Mornings or late afternoons. In summer, the traditional cheese market runs on Wednesday mornings (roughly July to mid-August); great atmosphere, but busy.
Tip: Edam is about 10 minutes from Volendam by car or bike, or on the same bus route from Amsterdam.
Best time of day
Early morning is best in Volendam: the harbour faces east so it catches the sunrise over the water, and the Dijk is quiet until shops open. Late afternoon works well in Marken and Edam once day-trip groups have left. Avoid the Dijk between late morning and mid-afternoon on spring and summer weekends.
Volendam through the seasons
- Spring
- Mild, often windy, with the Marken Express restarting around late March. Easter and May holidays bring big crowds to the Dijk.
- Summer
- Longest days and the busiest period. The Edam cheese market runs on summer Wednesdays. Shoot early or in the evening.
- Autumn
- Fewer visitors and dramatic skies over the Markermeer. The Marken boat stops at the end of October.
- Winter
- Quiet, grey and atmospheric, with short days (sunset around 16:30 in December). Some shops and cafés on the Dijk have reduced hours.
Weather and the rain plan
Volendam sits on open water, so wind off the Markermeer is the norm and it can feel several degrees colder than Amsterdam. Showers blow through quickly. In rain, the alleys of the Doolhof are more sheltered than the dike; for heavy rain, rescheduling is usually the better option.
Getting there and around
EBS buses run from the bus station at the back (IJ side) of Amsterdam Centraal to Volendam in roughly 30–40 minutes, and continue to Edam. By car it takes about 25 minutes from central Amsterdam; parking near the Dijk is paid and fills on busy days. The Marken Express boat connects Volendam and Marken in season.
Local rules and etiquette
Volendam is a working town with residents, not a theme park. The costume studios are private businesses: do not photograph inside or use their props without paying. Fishing boats and moorings are private property. The Marken Express and Edam cheese market schedules change each year, so check the current timetable before planning around them.

Photography in Volendam: questions
Is a TulipFrame photoshoot the same as the costume photo studios in Volendam?
No. The studios on the Dijk dress you in traditional costume and take a quick posed portrait indoors. A photographer booked through TulipFrame walks with you around the harbour, the old quarter and optionally Marken or Edam, and delivers edited photos afterwards. You can easily do both.
How much does a photoshoot in Volendam cost?
Sessions start from €150 for a short tourist shoot, from €180 for couples and from €250 for families. Adding Marken or Edam adds time and travel, which your photographer will include in the quote.
Can we add Marken and Edam to the same session?
Yes, in season. The Marken Express boat takes about 30 minutes and runs from roughly late March to the end of October; Edam is about 10 minutes away by car or bike. A two to three-hour session can cover Volendam plus one of them comfortably.
What is the best time for photos in Volendam?
Early morning. The harbour faces east over the water, so it gets the sunrise, and the Dijk is quiet until the shops open. Late morning to mid-afternoon on summer weekends is very crowded.
How do we get to Volendam from Amsterdam?
EBS buses leave from the IJ side of Amsterdam Centraal and take about 30–40 minutes. Driving takes around 25 minutes, with paid parking near the Dijk.
