How much does maternity photography cost in Amsterdam?
Maternity photography in Amsterdam starts from €250 for a session of around an hour, outdoors in a park or along a canal, or in a studio. Adding a partner or children, a second location, a studio rental or extra time increases the price. Your final quote depends on the photographer, location, date and what you want included.
A maternity shoot in Amsterdam needs to be planned for comfort first: short walks, flat routes, somewhere to sit, a toilet nearby, and a backup if the wind picks up. The city is compact enough that all of that is easy to arrange.
This page covers the settings that work well for pregnancy photos in and around Amsterdam, timing within the pregnancy and the day, and the practical details.
Settings that suit pregnancy photos
- Vondelpark. Flat paths, benches everywhere, cafés with toilets, tall trees for soft light. Summer brings the rose garden.
- Westerpark. Tall reeds and water in the western part feel wild, yet you are ten minutes from the Jordaan.
- Amsterdamse Bos. Woodland and lakes on the city's southern edge. Easiest by car or taxi.
- Quiet canals. Bloemgracht or Brouwersgracht for a classic Amsterdam background with little walking between spots.
- The beach. Zandvoort is about 30 minutes by direct train from Amsterdam Centraal. Dunes and sea make for flowing dresses; wind is strong. See Zandvoort.
- Studio. Daylight studios in Amsterdam can be rented by the hour; good for winter or for a more intimate style.
Timing
Most people book around 28–34 weeks, when the bump is clearly visible but moving around is still comfortable. If you are expecting twins or have a complicated pregnancy, earlier is sensible.
Within the day, morning or late afternoon usually works best: cooler in summer, calmer in the parks. In June, golden hour is around 21:00–22:00, which may be too late; in December, the light is gone by about 16:30.
Book a few weeks ahead and ask about flexibility: if you need to move the date for health reasons, most photographers will try to accommodate.
Season changes the options more than people expect. In spring and early summer, Vondelpark and Westerpark are at their greenest and the reeds in Westerpark stand tall by midsummer. In autumn the canal elms turn yellow from late October, which gives warm tones without needing sun. From November to February, days are short and damp, so many people choose a studio or a short outdoor session at midday followed by indoor frames. A due date in January usually means a shoot in November or early December; plan for that light.
Comfort and practicalities
- Short routes. The photographer will plan one area with minimal walking and places to sit.
- Toilets. Cafés in Vondelpark and Westerpark, plus museums and hotels in the centre.
- Clothing. Fitted dresses and knits show the bump; long flowing dresses work outdoors but move a lot in Dutch wind. Bring a warm layer between shots.
- Partner and children. Most sessions include a few frames with them. Tell the photographer who is coming.
- Getting there. A taxi to the start point saves energy. Trams are fine, and people will usually give up a seat.
What to wear for a maternity shoot here
Choose clothes for the setting and the weather:
- Canals and brick: solid, warm or soft colours (cream, dusty pink, sage, rust) stand out against red brick.
- Parks and reeds: light neutrals or pastels; a longer dress catches the light in Westerpark's reeds.
- Beach: flowing fabric works beautifully in Zandvoort's sea breeze, but bring a coat for between shots, even in summer.
- Winter: a long wool coat open over a fitted dress is a very Amsterdam look, and keeps you warm.
Flat shoes for walking, with a second pair for photos if you like. A partner can carry a bag with water and snacks.
Weather and plan B
Amsterdam's grey skies are kind to skin tones and fabric, so overcast is not a problem. Rain and strong wind are. With maternity sessions, it is worth agreeing a flexible window rather than one fixed date, because both weather and energy vary.
A studio is the most reliable backup. Alternatively, the photographer can suggest covered spots in the city. See Amsterdam photoshoots in the rain.
After the baby arrives, you might also consider newborn photography.
